Wednesday was a day of shock for many staff at The Washington Post after publisher Fred Ryan announced layoffs during a town hall meeting. But what did they expect after putting out so much misinformation? Kathy Baird, the outlet’s chief spokesperson, confirmed that an unspecified “number of positions will be eliminated” and executive editor Sally Buzbee had previously announced the termination of all ten staffers from the outlet’s stand-alone weekly Sunday magazine.

The out-of-the-blue announcement resulted in confusion amongst staff as many were unaware that their jobs were at risk. Some members of staff expressed their disbelief at the decision to lay off employees when the outlet is still profitable and has been growing in recent years. Others were concerned about how this decision would affect their families and financial security.

The news was met with anger by some staffers who felt that Ryan had not adequately answered questions or addressed their concerns about job security following his announcement. The Washington Post has been known for its liberal bias and this latest move by the paper’s management has only served to further alienate those on the left side of the political spectrum.

Many within The Washington Post have expressed frustration with Ryan’s lack of transparency and communication surrounding the layoffs. There have also been allegations that he was not truthful in his statements about why these layoffs were necessary. It appears that Ryan was attempting to avoid any direct questions from staff, instead opting for a presentation style approach to delivering his speech. This led to an uproar from some members of staff who felt that they deserved answers to their questions regarding job security and other matters related to the layoffs.

It remains unclear what motivated Ryan to make such a dramatic decision without consulting his own staff, or why he chose to avoid answering any direct questions during his presentation on Wednesday. What we do know is that there is real anger amongst some WaPo staffers over how this situation has been handled and it is unlikely that these frustrations will dissipate anytime soon unless meaningful answers are provided by management in regards to why these layoffs are necessary and how they plan on maintaining job security going forward.

I have a theory. I think with the changing tides in political power, the liberal media group needs to trim back the number of left-wing activists they have on staff. Especially if they want to avoid fighting it out with the GOP-run House. I could be wrong, but I just don’t think the misinformation and inciteful coverage is going to cut it anymore.

Watch:

He just ignored them completely. WaPo hasn’t gone public as far as giving a reason for their recent rash layoffs. What do you think is going on?
