While speaking with CNN’s Anderson Cooper, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi shocked liberals by announcing that the attack on her husband has changed the direction of her political career. Cooper asked if the vicious attack had made an impact on her decision to return to office—Which, of course, it had. Still, Cooper seemed to be in utter disbelief as Pelosi explained her reasoning:
“Well, I have to say my decision will be affected about what happened the last week or two,” Pelosi said. “And it will impacted by – well, I – let me just say this: I have been blessed by my colleagues. As Whip first, then Leader, and then Speaker of the House for four terms. That’s a great honor. Greatest honor I have, though, is to represent the people of San Francisco. To walk on the Floor of the House – every time I walk on, I think, ‘They chose me to be the one to speak for them.’”
“Imagine, I only thought I was coming for ten years at the most,” she said. “If that. And here I am. I never expected to run. I never expected to run for leadership. But people encouraged me to run, and then people go to run for leadership. And here I am.”
“But this institution is a great institution. My father served here, and I had great reverence for it. I was taught that as a little girl,” Pelosi continued. “And then when he was Mayor, of course, he always referenced his service in Congress. It’s a place where great things have happened for our country. To see the assault on January 6th on this Capitol was something that was so devastating and traumatic for many of us. Some of my Members who are calling me about their races now, and understanding the trauma we’re experiencing again with Paul – we’re revisiting the trauma they felt that day on January 6th, having the same root, disinformation and the rest.” [You can view this entire video here or read the transcript, here.]
Something worth noting about the interview is that the Speaker’s opinion on volatile political rhetoric has changed. Pelosi as well as other top Democrats have made several unforgettable accusations against half of the country. Calling concerned parents a threat to democracy. Now Pelosi says that rhetoric is ‘unsustainable’.
Paul Pelosi seems to be making a recovery from the attack. The details of what happened exactly are still unclear but police say that David DePape, 42, is facing a litany of state charges, including attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. These charges are in addition to the federal charges DePape faces, which include assault and attempted kidnapping.
DePape, a California resident and known drug addict, was in the country illegally on an expired visa. Police also say that Nancy was his intended target as he reportedly entered the home asking “where’s Nancy?” The exact motive of his attack and his political views are up for debate as police continue their investigation.
His drug use, mental health, and immigration status combined with reports that claim he was homeless does lead me to believe that it was politically motivated but not how it’s being reported. Pelosi has reigned as a lawmaker in California for decades. Policies written by California Democrats have created a massive homeless problem—Many of whom have mental health issues and drug addictions. This is just my opinion, but I think the attack was more than likely related to local politics rather than anything that’s going on nationally.
