In the current political climate, it is becoming increasingly difficult to differentiate between genuine political debate and rhetoric loaded with personal attacks. This was recently made evident when John Leguizamo, the temporary host of The Daily Show, brought on The View’s Ana Navarro to discuss Republican efforts to portray Democrats as socialists.

Navarro was quick to point out that Republicans are the “real socialists” who “hate you” and “hate me” for being Latinos.

Navarro’s comments were alarming. She seemed to be implying that Republicans are the only ones who are capable of being bigoted or discriminatory, and that any disagreement with Democrats is rooted in hatred. This is simply untrue.

Criticizing the media is not attacking the free press and fighting wokeness is not socialism. Furthermore, wanting a sensible immigration system and secure border does not make someone a racist. People who disagree with the Democratic platform are not motivated by hate.

Navarro went on to claim that the details of immigration don’t matter, that all Latino communities need to unite with each other and with other minority groups regardless of their backgrounds.

This is a problematic assumption, because differentiating between political refugees and economic refugees is an important part of immigration policy. Failing to recognize this difference could lead to disastrous consequences.

Navarro’s comments are indicative of a larger problem in our society, which is the tendency of some to demonize their political opponents. This is not healthy or productive— But this IS Navarro!

“This much I know, John, the people who hate you, the people who hate me, don’t care about that. They don’t care how much of your DNA came from Spain or how much of it came from indigenous America, they came that you’re a Latina and they want to otherize us. As soon as we realize that and the quicker we realize that, and that we have to band together and fight against discrimination, bigotry, together, the more powerful we will be and not fall prey to this kind of stupidity.”

People of all backgrounds should be able to engage in civil discourse without resorting to personal attacks.
