The media is certainly spinning a narrative with the push for gender reassignment treatments for children. While they spend a great deal of time talking about the positives, they love to ignore the ugly realities that happen when adults try to force children to make lifelong decisions during the most vulnerable points in their lives.

The media has been successful at spinning this narrative by keeping the opposition’s voice at a minimum or in most cases, absent all together.

Recently, PBS NewsHour aired a segment that was titled “Parents concerned as new state laws restrict rights of transgender children.” The segment was 11 minutes long and featured a medley of liberal parents who were against Republican legislators who oppose “gender-affirming care” for kids. Anchor William Brangham interviewed a radical transgender activist Erin Reed and the conservative or Republican view was aired for 48 seconds.

The Public Broadcasting Act of 1967, which created the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and federal funding for TV public-affairs programs, insisted on “strict adherence to objectivity and balance in all programs or series of programs of a controversial nature.” However, PBS NewsHour disregarded this language and allowed one side to take over the conversation.

In the segment, Speaker of the House Cameron Sexton was allowed to speak for 48 seconds and he suggested that people who undergo gender reassignment surgery regret it 80% of the time. Erin Reed was then allowed to shoot down his argument without rebuttal. Reed compared GOP opposition to “genocide” and suggested that parents must either make a transgender surrender or the child will commit suicide.

It’s clear that PBS NewsHour was biased in the segment and only allowed one side of the argument to be heard. The transgender activist was given free reign to make her argument without any opposition and it was obvious that the segment was advocating for one side over the other. This is not the type of programming that the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 was meant to cover and it’s a blatant disregard of the law.

It’s important to recognize that children may not have the capacity to decide what gender they want to be for the rest of their lives. It’s also important to remember that there can be serious risks associated with gender reassignment surgery, as suggested by Speaker Sexton. It’s important to have an objective debate on the issue and allow both sides to be heard.

Watch

PBS NewsHour needs to adhere to the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 and recognize that this is a controversial issue that requires balance and objectivity. Ignoring this law and giving one side free reign to discuss the issue is not only a breach of their own rules, but it’s also a disservice to the American people.
