It’s tragic that a school shooting took place in Nashville, Tennessee, and even more so when we consider the victims: three children and three adults.

The shooter, Audrey Hale, was 28-years-old and identified as transgender. But rather than grieving the loss of these lives and searching for solutions to prevent school shootings in the future, Democrats and the White House have chosen to make this tragedy into a political issue.

This was highlighted by Democratic Rep. Steve Cohen of Tennessee, who said that there was “no hope” of working with Republicans who supported the Second Amendment.

“It’s hard for me to serve up there now with some of the people I have to serve with,” Cohen told MSNBC host Katy Tur. “They’re part of the danger. They could go — I’m not going to get into that — it’s just that they are so attached to guns and there’s no hope on them.”

Rather than coming together to find a solution, Democrats and the White House have instead used this tragedy to push for gun control.

This is evidenced by President Joe Biden, congressional Democrats, media figures and celebrities who have called for a ban on so-called “assault weapons” in the wake of the shooting.

It’s understandable that people are looking for a way to prevent these tragedies from happening again, but the knee-jerk reaction of trying to restrict the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens is completely misguided.

It’s difficult to understand why the Democratic Party and the White House believe that the answer to this issue is to take away the guns of those who have done no wrong, rather than to look for ways to actually help those in need and prevent these shootings from occurring in the first place.

The Second Amendment is a fundamental right of the American people, and it should not be taken away simply because some people are using firearms to commit criminal acts.

If Democrats and the White House were truly interested in helping people, they should focus on finding ways to help those suffering from mental illness and to provide more resources for communities to address these issues.

We should never forget the victims of this tragedy and the pain their families are going through. But we should also remember that the answer to preventing school shootings isn’t to take away the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding citizens but rather to focus on providing help and resources to those in need.
