This pilot initiative, set to commence on Thursday, seeks to alleviate the strain that migrants have been placing on public resources in the city and state. Angelo Fernández Hernández, a White House spokesperson, explained that the program will function as a “one-stop-shop” to address the challenges migrants are posing to the city’s shelter system, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Fernández Hernández elaborated, “The clinic will begin with a pilot phase, serving approximately 150 migrants daily, and we will work in partnership with the state, city, and the Resurrection Project as they expand their efforts in the coming days and weeks,” as conveyed to the Chicago Sun-Times.

The Biden administration had previously committed to a similar initiative in collaboration with the state of New York in August, as noted by the Chicago Sun-Times, and there are reports of a similar program in development for Boston.

Illegal immigration at the southern border continues to surge, with a Daily Caller News Foundation review of fiscal year 2023 data revealing that the number of migrants who entered the U.S. after illegally crossing the U.S.-Mexico border surpasses the populations of 11 states.

Migrants are required to wait for 180 days before becoming eligible for work authorization. In Chicago, a significant number of migrants are arriving via buses from Colorado and Texas, with some of them finding temporary shelter in police stations.
