In-N-Out Burger decided to pull the plug on its lone Oakland, California, establishment, citing a surge in criminal activities as the primary reason.

The renowned fast-food joint, situated in a bustling area near Oakland International Airport, will shut its doors on March 24.

Denny Warnick, In-N-Out’s chief operating officer, mockingly remarked that despite the company’s best efforts to “create safer conditions,” customers and employees were regularly falling prey to various crimes.

This closure marks the first in In-N-Out’s 75-year history, highlighting the severity of the situation. Warnick cheekily stated, “We feel the frequency and severity of the crimes being encountered by our customers and associates leave us no alternative.”

Oakland, infamous for a spike in property crime and robberies, seemed to have outdone itself in the vicinity of the In-N-Out. Since 2019, the police have recorded a staggering 1,335 incidents around the Oakport Street location – a dubious distinction that no other place in Oakland can boast, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.

Unsurprisingly, the Oakland Police Department remained tight-lipped when pressed for immediate data and comments by The Associated Press.

Sean Crawford, an eyewitness working nearby, regaled the Chronicle with a tale of two individuals casually strolling through the In-N-Out drive-thru lane, robbing people at gunpoint. It appears the In-N-Out experience in Oakland had more to offer than just burgers and fries.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao, appearing on KTVU-TV, assured the public that more police officers had been assigned to the area. However, with a hint of mockery, critics might wonder if additional cameras and statistics are enough to transform the crime-ridden narrative. Thao defended her efforts, stating, “As mayor, I have prioritized this critical gateway to Oakland.” Yet, the statistics provided by her office seemed more like an attempt at damage control than a convincing solution, with conveniently timed downward trends in property crime on Hegenberger Road – a major street near the doomed burger joint. Car break-ins reportedly down 43%, thefts down by 49%, as if crime could be neatly packaged into year-end statistics.
