Former Gov. Chris Christie (R-NJ), a contender for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, vented his frustrations on “CNN Tonight,” criticizing former President Donald Trump for allegedly retaining classified documents. According to Christie, Trump’s actions were nothing more than a display of childish and foolish behavior.
During the interview, anchor Kaitlan Collins asked for Christie’s response to an audio recording of Trump discussing classified documents with individuals lacking security clearances. In his usual tone, Christie remarked, “It sounds just like him.”
He proceeded to describe Trump as someone who habitually rationalizes his own misdeeds, justifies his actions even when he knows they’re wrong, and constantly seeks attention. Essentially, Trump is an incorrigible show-off, and that audio tape was merely an instance of him seeking to impress others.
Christie explained that people often asked him about Trump’s motive for retaining these documents, citing the Mar-a-Lago raid from last year. Some speculated that Trump intended to share them with foreign governments, sell them, or even engage in blackmail.
However, Christie opined that these speculations missed the mark. He believed Trump’s motivation was simply to maintain the illusion of being a president because he couldn’t come to terms with the fact that he wasn’t in power anymore.
Christie admitted that it might appear childish and unintelligent, but he believed that was the primary reason for Trump’s actions.
Collins drew a parallel between Trump’s behavior and a child reaching into a cookie jar.
Christie concurred, saying, “Yeah, I mean, look, he knows it’s wrong.” Referring to the tape, Christie acknowledged that Trump himself acknowledged that the documents were classified and should remain secret. Trump even admitted that he had the power to declassify them during his presidency but chose not to.
Despite this awareness, Trump behaved like a mischievous child constantly testing boundaries. That’s what made the situation so infuriating. None of this needed to occur if Trump had exercised better judgment.
In essence, from Christie’s conservative non-Trump supporter perspective, Trump’s actions were seen as juvenile and foolish, driven by a desire for attention and a refusal to accept the reality of no longer being president.
