In what can only be described as a scene ripped from a low-budget action movie, the Parramatta District Court recently played footage of a 2023 kidnapping that defies both logic and decency. Four men, led by the bride’s own brother, staged a dramatic abduction of one Younis Younis, claiming their bizarre escapade was fueled by concern for “family honor.” Spoiler alert: it wasn’t honor—it was outright lunacy.

The January 11, 2023 incident saw the self-appointed enforcers of marital legitimacy—Kodar Faytrouni, Safwan Hussein, Ali Hamad, and Abud Elkerdi—traveling from Melbourne to Guildford to teach Younis a lesson. His crime? Allegedly marrying Faytrouni’s sister for a visa. Because clearly, in their warped world, the only logical response to a suspicion like this is to turn into vigilantes.

A Masterclass in Misogyny

The footage shown in court, captured by Hamad, reveals Hussein putting Younis in a headlock while Faytrouni, our self-proclaimed defender of sisterly honor, lurked nearby. But they didn’t stop at public humiliation. Oh no, they upped the ante by dragging Younis to his mother’s home and assaulting him there too.

As if that wasn’t enough, the gang then moved him to another location, forcing him to endure hours of terror. At one point, Younis was coerced into agreeing to an Islamic divorce over the phone while his wife listened in horror. Let that sink in: these men literally thought they could “resolve” their twisted grievances by steamrolling a woman’s right to choose her own partner.

“Low Intellect” and Other Excuses

Faytrouni’s lawyer had the audacity to blame the entire debacle on his client’s “low intellect.” That’s right, folks. We’re supposed to believe that Faytrouni’s lack of smarts somehow excuses orchestrating a violent, misogynistic assault. Judge Stephen Hanley wasn’t having it.

“It shows a complete failure to allow this woman to select who she wants to have as her partner,” Hanley rightly pointed out. He also labeled the attackers’ actions as both planned and misogynistic.

The court heard how these men were not only brazen but frighteningly organized in their mission to impose their outdated, oppressive ideals. “They seem to be able to find him, break into his house, extract him, assault him in the car, and force him to make a divorce,” Judge Hanley observed, before questioning the defense’s absurd attempts to downplay the seriousness of the crime.

Misguided Family “Responsibility”

Crown prosecutor Adam Muddle added fuel to the fire by detailing Faytrouni’s delusional motivations. Faytrouni apparently believed his actions were justified by his so-called “responsibility” to his sister. Of course, nothing screams “responsibility” like kidnapping and assault.

Muddle’s arguments emphasized the twisted logic behind the crime, noting how Faytrouni’s self-righteous sense of duty completely disregarded the autonomy and dignity of his own sister.

A “Bizarre” Case in a Broken System

While Faytrouni’s lawyer called the incident “bizarre,” that term doesn’t quite capture the audacity and cruelty on display. What’s truly bizarre is the broader cultural mindset that allows this kind of behavior to fester. It’s a mentality that devalues women’s choices and justifies violence in the name of controlling their lives.

Judge Hanley hit the nail on the head when he described the group’s attitude toward women as “strange.” Strange is putting it lightly—this case reeks of medieval thinking. It’s 2024, yet some people still act like women are property to be traded, divorced, or “rescued” without their consent.

Justice Delayed

For now, justice remains pending. Faytrouni and Elkerdi will return to court on December 20, while Hamad and Hussein are due back on December 13. One can only hope the sentencing sends a strong message: misogyny and vigilantism have no place in a civilized society.

As for Faytrouni collapsing during a court lunch break? Save the theatrics. Perhaps he finally realized his defense of “low intellect” won’t hold water.

The Bigger Picture

This case isn’t just about one absurd kidnapping plot. It’s a glaring example of what happens when outdated cultural attitudes collide with modern values. It’s about the need to defend individual rights—especially those of women—against the overreach of misguided, self-appointed moral enforcers.

Let’s be clear: this isn’t just an Australian issue. The fight against misogyny and toxic control is a universal battle. And while the court system may eventually dole out justice in this case, it’s up to society to ensure these attitudes are challenged at every turn.

For now, let’s watch and wait as these self-styled protectors of honor face the consequences of their idiocy. Something tells us their low intellect defense won’t hold up in the court of public opinion either.
