Sidney K. Powell, a former member of Donald J. Trump’s legal team following his loss in the 2020 election, entered a guilty plea on Thursday morning, admitting to six misdemeanor charges instead of proceeding to a scheduled criminal trial set for the following week.
This development was part of a case involving 19 defendants, including Mr. Trump, who were indicted in August for their alleged involvement in efforts to undermine the election results in Georgia.

Appearing in a downtown Atlanta courtroom, Ms. Powell, aged 68, received a six-year probation sentence for her involvement in a conspiracy to intentionally interfere with election duties. This outcome represented a significantly less severe consequence compared to what she might have faced if found guilty of the initial charges, which also included a violation of the state racketeering law. Additionally, she was ordered to pay a $6,000 fine and agreed to provide $2,700 in restitution to the state of Georgia, along with composing an apology letter to its citizens.
During the proceedings, prosecutors revealed that Ms. Powell had given them a recorded statement as part of her plea agreement, and she had committed to testifying against any of the remaining 17 defendants. Furthermore, she agreed to surrender documents related to the case.

This guilty plea dealt a blow to Mr. Trump, who, alongside his former personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani, faced the most charges among the defendants, with both of them confronting 13 counts. Notably, it signified that a member of Trump’s legal team would cooperate with the prosecution in its pursuit of criminal convictions connected to attempts to maintain the former president’s grip on power after his 2020 election defeat.

Few individuals were as outspoken in promoting election fraud theories following Mr. Trump’s loss to Joseph R. Biden Jr. in the 2020 election as Ms. Powell. In prominent public appearances, often in conjunction with other members of the Trump legal team, she advanced various conspiracy theories involving Venezuela, Cuba, China, as well as figures such as George Soros, Hugo Chávez, and the Clintons. These claims were made without evidence and included assertions that voting machines had fraudulently altered millions of votes.

While appearing in Fulton County Superior Court on Thursday morning, Judge Scott McAfee posed the question to Ms. Powell: “Are you pleading guilty today because you acknowledge that there is a substantial factual basis, that there are enough facts, supporting this guilty plea?” To which she responded, “I do.”
