In an egregious display of police corruption, the City of Fall River stands accused of covering up heinous acts of domestic violence perpetrated by one of their own. Brenna Custadio has filed a lawsuit against the city, the police department, and several officers, alleging that they conspired to shield former officer Bryan Custadio from the law. This is a shocking example of how deeply rooted corruption can protect abusers and silence victims.

According to the lawsuit, Brenna Custadio was subjected to repeated, brutal assaults by her then-husband, Bryan Custadio. On October 15, 2021, Bryan allegedly brandished an axe, making threats and terrorizing Brenna before physically assaulting her. The horror continued on October 20, 2021, when Bryan allegedly attacked her again, choking her until she was on the brink of unconsciousness, with her pleas for mercy met with brutal violence.
Bryan’s violence reached a crescendo on November 28, 2021, when, while on duty as a police officer, he allegedly dragged Brenna into their home, assaulted her, and attempted to steal her phone to prevent her from calling for help. Brenna’s call to 911 was only made possible after Bryan threw her phone at her in a fit of rage.
The most appalling aspect of this case is the police department’s response. Bryan’s superiors, Sergeant Michael DiGangi and other officers, arrived at the scene, but instead of arresting Bryan and collecting evidence, they let him leave with a police-issued shotgun. They didn’t photograph Brenna’s injuries or the scene of the assault, and Bryan was allowed to delete home security footage. This gross negligence and willful obstruction of justice are a stark reminder of the toxic culture of corruption within the Fall River Police Department.

Sergeant DiGangi’s report allegedly downplayed the severity of the assaults, painting Bryan in a sympathetic light. This manipulation of facts to protect a violent abuser is not just unethical—it’s criminal. The officers’ failure to follow protocol, their deliberate mishandling of evidence, and their intimidation of Brenna to discourage her from filing a restraining order are egregious abuses of power.
Brenna’s life was upended by Bryan’s violence and the police department’s betrayal. She was forced to abandon her coffee shop and flee the city, losing her sense of safety and livelihood. Bryan Custadio, who was finally terminated by the police department in the summer of 2022, had already inflicted irreversible damage on Brenna’s life.
The lawsuit, filed by the Law Office of Christopher Markey in Bristol County Superior Court, seeks to hold the City of Fall River accountable for this outrageous miscarriage of justice. This case shines a harsh light on the systemic corruption that allows police officers to act with impunity, protecting their own at the expense of victims.
What Causes “Black Violence”?
Police corruption is a blight on our society, eroding public trust and enabling criminal behavior among those sworn to protect and serve. The Fall River Police Department’s actions in this case are not just an isolated incident—they are symptomatic of a deeper, more insidious problem. When the protectors become the perpetrators, justice becomes a hollow promise.
Brenna Custadio’s bravery in coming forward and fighting for justice is commendable, but it should never have come to this. The City of Fall River must be held accountable for its role in this cover-up, and systemic changes must be implemented to ensure that such gross misconduct is never allowed to happen again.
The corruption within the Fall River Police Department is a cancer that must be eradicated. It is imperative that those involved in this cover-up face the full weight of the law, and that measures are put in place to protect victims of domestic violence, ensuring that they can seek help without fear of retribution or further abuse.
This lawsuit is not just about Brenna Custadio—it’s about exposing the rotten core of a system that prioritizes its own over the safety and well-being of the community. It’s about demanding accountability, justice, and a fundamental change in the way law enforcement operates. The people of Fall River deserve better, and it’s high time that corrupt officers are held to account for their actions.
