In a scathing critique, decorated Army veteran Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas blasted President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for declining invitations from Gold Star families to attend a ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery. The event, held last week, was organized to commemorate the third anniversary of the tragic deaths of U.S. service members killed by a suicide bomber during the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan under Biden’s administration.

Senator Cotton, who served combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, defended former President Donald Trump’s attendance at the event, emphasizing that Trump’s visit was at the request of the grieving families. “These families — Gold Star families — whose children died because of Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’s incompetence, invited him to the cemetery,” Cotton stated on NBC’s “Meet the Press.” He continued, “They asked him to take those photos during the wreath-laying event,” countering Harris’s dismissive comments about Trump’s presence being a “political stunt.”
Cotton did not hold back, questioning the whereabouts of Biden and Harris during the ceremony. “Where were they? Joe Biden was sitting at a beach. Kamala Harris was sitting at her mansion in Washington, DC,” he criticized, highlighting Biden’s vacation in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, and Harris’ proximity to Arlington, just a few miles away at her residence on the grounds of the U.S. Naval Observatory. “She was 4 miles away — 10 minutes,” Cotton remarked, underscoring the ease with which Harris could have attended to pay her respects to the fallen heroes.

Further, Cotton lambasted both Biden and Harris for their failure to acknowledge the Gold Star families. “She never has spoken to them or taken a meeting with them,” he asserted. Cotton laid the blame for the deaths of the 13 service members at the Kabul airport squarely on the shoulders of Biden and Harris. “It is because of her and Joe Biden’s incompetence that those 13 Americans were killed in Afghanistan,” he charged.
The senator’s pointed remarks came in response to a joint statement from the families of seven of the 13 victims, who condemned Vice President Harris’s attempts to politicize Trump’s visit to Arlington. “We, the families of the brave service members who were tragically killed in the Abbey Gate bombing, are appalled by Vice President Kamala Harris’ recent attempts to politicize President Trump’s visit to Arlington National Cemetery,” the statement read. “President Trump was invited by us, the Gold Star families, to attend the solemn ceremonies commemorating the three-year anniversary of our children’s deaths. He was there to honor their sacrifice, yet Vice President Harris has disgracefully twisted this sacred moment into a political ploy.”

Cotton’s unwavering support for the families and his sharp rebuke of Biden and Harris reflect the deep frustration and anger felt by many Americans over the administration’s handling of the Afghanistan withdrawal and its aftermath. The senator’s comments are likely to resonate strongly with conservative audiences who see Biden and Harris’s actions as a continuation of a pattern of disrespect toward the military and their sacrifices.
