Cornel West, the independent presidential candidate, has set his sights on winning over minority voters in Michigan for the 2024 election, a demographic that has seen a decline in support for President Joe Biden, as reported by Politico on Tuesday.

West’s campaign is strategizing with a ground game operation scheduled for early deployment in Michigan. The plan involves seeking support from various groups, including environmental justice advocates, the indigenous population, black voters, college students, and Arab Americans. This move is particularly timely as Biden faces a decrease in support from minority voters and Muslims in Michigan, attributed to the October 7 Hamas terrorist attack.

In an interview with Politico, West claimed to be the only major candidate bringing “sanity and sensitivity” to the suffering in Gaza. He criticized the other candidates, accusing them of living in a “Neolithic Age” concerning Middle East affairs. West positioned himself as the sole candidate capable of moving the country forward.

Recent polling, including surveys by New York Times/Sienna College and CBS News in early November, indicated significant losses in support for Biden among Hispanics, blacks, and youth voters. Minority support for the president has dropped by 33 points since the 2020 election. The NYT survey, covering states like Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, highlighted that the more diverse a state, the worse Biden performed against former President Donald Trump. The CBS News poll suggested that the state of the economy is negatively impacting Biden’s support among black and Hispanic voters, key constituencies for the Democratic Party.

Diverging from Biden’s pro-Israel stance during the Israel-Hamas conflict, West called for a ceasefire and expressed pro-Palestinian sentiments. Left-wing Democrats, including Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib, have threatened to withdraw support from Biden in 2024 unless he changes his stance on the conflict.

Anthony Karefa Rogers-Wright, a co-campaign manager for West, stated that they are following the lead of young people and Arab Americans in Michigan, who have indicated they wouldn’t vote for President Biden if the election were held tomorrow. This sentiment is echoed by members of the environmental justice community.

Despite his efforts, West faces significant fundraising challenges compared to fellow independent candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., as well as Biden and Trump. Since launching his campaign in early June, West has raised only $321,808 and currently has just over $100,000 in cash on hand, according to Federal Election Commission filings.

West’s political journey started with the People’s Party candidacy before seeking the Green Party’s nomination. He has now transitioned to running as an independent, requiring him to secure ballot access independently. West’s polling numbers in 2024 general election matchups with Biden, Trump, and Kennedy have ranged from 2% to 6%.
