Prince Andrew may soon have to bid farewell to his luxurious residence at the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park after King Charles moved to sever financial support for his brother. In a decisive step toward distancing the monarchy from the Duke of York, King Charles has officially cut off the annual £1 million allowance that Andrew once received, leaving him with mounting expenses and dwindling options.
From Scandal to Financial Cutoff
Public backlash against Prince Andrew has only grown since his infamous 2019 BBC interview, in which he attempted to explain his friendship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Following the interview, Andrew was compelled to step back from his royal duties and was stripped of military titles and patronages. However, he managed to hold onto his significant annual allowance and continued to reside at the sprawling, 30-room Royal Lodge.
But as of this year, King Charles has directed the privy purse to cease payments to Andrew, effectively ending the duke’s royal support. Additionally, Andrew’s seven-figure private security detail, once funded by the monarchy, will no longer be covered. These revelations appear in a newly updated biography of the royals by author Robert Hardman, serialized by the Daily Mail.
The Battle Over Royal Lodge
Andrew has resisted suggestions to downsize to Frogmore Cottage, a smaller but secure residence near Windsor Castle. Citing a long-term lease he claims grants him rights to the Royal Lodge, Andrew has firmly rejected proposals to relocate. However, with the financial support cut, the duke now faces the costly responsibility of maintaining the property independently. This includes protecting valuable artwork and furnishings from the Royal Collection, adding to his already steep expenses.
Sources close to the royals suggest that the clock is ticking. “The King doesn’t have unlimited patience,” remarked one insider, noting that while Andrew claims to have found “other sources of income” in international trade, questions remain as to whether he can realistically sustain such a costly lifestyle.
A Move Long in the Making
According to Hardman, King Charles is fulfilling the late Queen Elizabeth II’s quiet determination to address what was referred to as the “Andrew issue.” Though Charles initially funded Andrew’s security and living expenses following the Queen’s death in 2022, it’s clear that the King has since decided it is time for Andrew to step back from royal resources.
In a statement to The Times, a source close to the royal family stated: “It can be done tidily or untidily. It can be done with grace and dignity, or it can be forced upon him. Life at Royal Lodge is set to become increasingly cold and uncomfortable for the duke.” Friends say Andrew’s continued refusal to cooperate has further “soured” relations within the family.
A Royal Rift
With no official comment from Buckingham Palace, it’s evident that the royal family wants to keep this matter private. However, the saga speaks to a larger shift within the monarchy—a move toward transparency and accountability as King Charles distances the institution from scandal.
Meanwhile, Charles and Queen Camilla are slated for a high-profile visit to Italy next year, representing the Foreign Office. Their diplomatic engagements abroad underscore the monarchy’s broader role, even as Charles continues to make bold moves to address lingering family controversies.
As Prince Andrew grapples with the reality of his new financial limitations, many believe this is a long-overdue step in restoring public faith in the monarchy.
