Pride Month 2023 has concluded, and it’s worth acknowledging the diverse perspectives and conversations surrounding the LGBTQ+ community during this time.
While some individuals with differing viewpoints expressed their concerns, it’s important to reflect on the positive aspects that emerged.
For others, it’s a time to be thankful for the nonstop propaganda being shoved in every single social media post and advertisement feed.
Throughout June, Pride Month faced a unique set of challenges, as highlighted by the advocacy group GLAAD. The LGBTQ+ community experienced an unprecedented backlash, with numerous bills introduced across state legislatures in the United States that were viewed as unfavorable to their rights.
This prompted the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) to declare a “state of emergency.”
Despite the adversities faced by the LGBTQ+ community and the subsequent controversies involving businesses, the support on social media platforms has been notable.
The official @Pride Instagram account witnessed a steady increase of 17,160 followers, signifying a growing level of support, although the rise in followers was smaller compared to the previous year.
On TikTok, @Pride experienced significant success, gaining 65,400 followers in June 2023, demonstrating a strong surge of support. Twitter, however, witnessed a more modest increase of 1,206 followers, suggesting that this year’s Pride Month had a lower impact in terms of garnering new supporters compared to the previous year.
It is important to recognize that Pride Month can be a controversial topic for some individuals. Brands such as Bud Light and FC Barcelona faced criticism for their celebration of Pride.
Despite the backlash, Bud Light proceeded with its annual sponsorship of Toronto Pride in Canada, while FC Barcelona faced criticism for featuring the trans and Pride flags on the same day as Eid al-Adha, a Muslim holiday.
Amidst the diverse range of opinions, some major brands, including The North Face, Lego, and Miller Lite, chose not to actively promote Pride Month at the beginning of June 2023, despite having done so in the previous year.
Target initially indicated its support for Pride Month by stocking Pride clothing and inclusive swimwear, but it appeared to adjust its stance due to boycott calls.
As Pride Month draws to a close, it’s essential to recognize the various viewpoints surrounding it. The discussions, controversies, and expressions of support on social media serve as a reminder of the ongoing dialogue surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and representation.
