As Vice President Kamala Harris made a rare trip to the southern border on Friday, startling new federal data revealed just how deeply the Biden-Harris administration’s failed immigration policies have impacted American communities. The numbers, provided by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), show that more than 15,000 illegal immigrants currently living in the U.S. have either been convicted or are accused of homicide. This eye-opening statistic underscores a major public safety crisis that has only grown worse under the current administration’s border policies.
A Disturbing Picture of Criminal Activity
The data, shared with Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) and published during Harris’ trip to southern Arizona, highlights the severe consequences of the administration’s lax approach to border security. Gonzales, a vocal critic of Harris and her role as the Biden administration’s so-called “border czar,” revealed the shocking figures on social media, emphasizing the danger posed to everyday Americans.
“As of July 21, 2024, there were 662,566 noncitizens with criminal histories on ICE’s national docket — 13,099 criminally convicted MURDERS!” Gonzales tweeted. His tweet encapsulates the frustration and outrage felt by many Americans who are alarmed by the growing threat posed by illegal immigrants with violent criminal records living freely within our borders.
To put this in perspective: over 13,000 illegal immigrants convicted of murder are known to be living in the U.S., while 1,845 are currently accused of homicide. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg. ICE also reported that more than 100,000 illegal immigrants convicted or accused of assault, along with thousands convicted of sexual assault, remain at large. This is the direct result of sanctuary city policies and the Biden-Harris administration’s decision to scrap Trump’s effective “Remain in Mexico” policy, which kept potential criminals from crossing into the U.S. in the first place.
Biden-Harris Immigration Failures: The Root of the Problem
Since taking office, Biden and Harris have dismantled many of the successful policies implemented by former President Donald Trump, including the vital “Remain in Mexico” policy, which prevented asylum seekers from entering the U.S. while their claims were processed. Under Biden and Harris, however, many illegal immigrants—including those with criminal backgrounds—have been allowed to enter the country and remain free while awaiting asylum hearings that are often years delayed.
The ICE data shows that the administration’s reckless approach to border security has had a direct and devastating impact on American lives. Currently, ICE is detaining just 277 illegal immigrants who have been convicted of homicide, with another 51 detained for facing such charges. Meanwhile, an alarming 13,099 convicted murderers and 1,845 accused killers remain at large in communities across the country. These numbers represent a massive public safety failure that puts every American at risk.
While the Biden-Harris administration continues to paint itself as compassionate toward migrants, the reality is that their policies are enabling violent criminals to enter and remain in the U.S. The White House’s refusal to prioritize border security has led to a crisis that is now affecting communities far beyond the southern border.
Sanctuary Cities: Shielding Criminals from Justice
Another disturbing element of this crisis is the role of sanctuary city policies in protecting dangerous criminals. States like California, Illinois, and New York, which refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities, have become safe havens for illegal immigrants with violent criminal records. According to ICE, these sanctuary policies prevent local law enforcement from sharing critical information with federal authorities, allowing criminals to slip through the cracks.
Patrick Lechleitner, ICE’s acting director, pointed out the dangers of these policies in a letter to Rep. Gonzales: “Sanctuary policies can end up shielding dangerous criminals, who often victimize those same communities.” He added that while some jurisdictions may believe that cooperating with ICE would undermine trust in immigrant communities, the opposite is true. By refusing to work with federal authorities, sanctuary cities are creating an environment where violent criminals can evade justice and continue to terrorize law-abiding citizens.

In many cases, ICE has issued detainers for individuals who should be deported, only for sanctuary jurisdictions to release them without notifying federal authorities. This was the case with Niefred Serpa-Acosta, a Venezuelan gang member and illegal immigrant who was released from jail in Colorado despite an ICE detainer, only to go on and commit further crimes. This is just one example of how sanctuary city policies directly jeopardize public safety.
Trump’s Tough Stance on Immigration: What America Needs Again
The Biden-Harris administration’s open-border policies have unleashed chaos, making it clear that the country is in dire need of strong, effective leadership on immigration. Under President Trump, America took a hardline stance on illegal immigration, emphasizing border security and law enforcement cooperation. Trump’s policies, including the “Remain in Mexico” program and increased ICE enforcement, were designed to protect American citizens from the dangers of unchecked illegal immigration.
In contrast, the Biden-Harris administration’s approach has been one of weakness and appeasement, allowing criminals to infiltrate our communities. If Trump returns to the White House in 2024, he has vowed to restore law and order by securing the border, reinstating successful policies like “Remain in Mexico,” and cracking down on sanctuary cities that protect criminals.
Conclusion: Time to Prioritize American Safety
The federal data released this week is a stark reminder of the real-world consequences of failed immigration policies. With over 15,000 illegal immigrants either convicted or accused of homicide currently residing in the U.S., the American people deserve answers and accountability from their leaders. Vice President Harris’ belated border visit is nothing more than a political show, while the crisis continues to escalate.
It’s time for a return to strong, decisive leadership that prioritizes the safety and security of American citizens. Under Trump, border security was a top priority, and it must be again. The American people cannot afford to wait any longer for real action to protect our communities from the dangers of illegal immigration.
