NBC News’ “Meet the Press” was forced to issue a correction on Sunday after anchor Kristen Welker wrongly stated that Vice President Kamala Harris had met with the families of Americans killed in Afghanistan. However, the correction itself was poorly handled, leaving many viewers questioning the network’s credibility.

During an interview with Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR), Welker pressed the Republican senator about former President Donald Trump’s recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery. Trump had visited the cemetery to honor the 13 American soldiers who were killed three years ago in the terrorist attack on Abbey Gate at Kabul’s international airport. The Harris/Walz campaign had accused Trump of using the solemn occasion for political purposes, sparking a debate over whether his campaign should have been allowed to capture photos or video during the visit.
The controversy intensified when Gold Star families criticized Vice President Harris for her role in the disastrous Afghanistan withdrawal and for failing to reach out to them. Welker attempted to defend Harris during her exchange with Cotton, but she made a glaring factual error. “Well, they did meet with them at the dignified transfer. They were with them at the dignified transfer,” Welker claimed, referring to the solemn return of the soldiers’ remains to U.S. soil. This statement was not just misleading—it was flat-out false. Harris had not been present at the dignified transfer, a fact that “Meet the Press” later had to clarify.

Welker’s incorrect assertion did not merely “imply” that Harris was there; she unequivocally stated it as fact, a blunder that raised serious questions about the show’s journalistic standards. This misstep is particularly glaring given Welker’s experience; she moderated the final presidential debate in 2020 and is expected to maintain a high level of accuracy and professionalism.
The situation serves as yet another example of the mainstream media’s tendency to cover for the Biden administration, even at the cost of factual reporting. In a time when trust in the media is at an all-time low, mistakes like these only serve to deepen public skepticism. For many viewers, NBC’s botched correction was too little, too late, further eroding confidence in the network’s commitment to unbiased journalism.
