As Election Day approaches, multiple states, including Washington, Oregon, and Nevada, have placed the National Guard on standby, anticipating potential civil unrest related to the 2024 presidential election. The preparations come amid reports of damaged or destroyed ballots in the Pacific Northwest, raising concerns over ballot security and election integrity in an already tense political climate.

Ballot Drop Box Fires Fuel Security Concerns

In recent weeks, three ballot drop boxes in Washington and Oregon have been set on fire, causing significant ballot damage. In Vancouver, Washington, a drop box was set ablaze Monday, destroying a large number of ballots. Similarly, in Portland, Oregon, a separate ballot box fire destroyed some ballots, although most were spared due to built-in fire suppression systems. Officials believe these incidents are connected, with Portland police releasing a suspect description yet struggling to make an identification.

These incidents are troubling to election officials and residents alike, especially as Oregon and Washington primarily rely on vote-by-mail and ballot drop-off systems. The ballot fires are being closely monitored, with officials pledging that every effort is being made to maintain election security and ensure all votes are counted.

National Guard Deployment: A Necessary Precaution

Washington Governor Jay Inslee responded to these incidents by announcing that the National Guard is on standby. “The southwest region of Washington state has already experienced specific instances of election-related unrest,” Inslee stated, citing the need to be “fully prepared to respond to any potential additional civil unrest.”

While the exact number of troops to be deployed remains undisclosed, the Guard will be available from Monday through Thursday to support local law enforcement efforts. Similarly, Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has placed the National Guard on standby, coordinating with law enforcement and emergency services to ensure the safety of voters heading to the polls or dropping off ballots.

In Nevada, Governor Joe Lombardo announced that 60 National Guard members are on standby, underscoring the importance of a “safe and smooth Election Day.” Nevada’s preparations mirror those of past elections, with state and local resources in place to manage any disruptions.

Cybersecurity Threats on the Radar

Concerns over cybersecurity are also front and center in states like Colorado, where the National Guard’s Cyber Task Force has been activated to safeguard election infrastructure. This measure, in place since 2018, protects voter databases and digital systems that are crucial to ensuring election integrity.

In recent years, cyber threats have emerged as a key issue for election security, prompting several states to leverage their National Guard units to assist with cybersecurity efforts. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold confirmed the activation of their cyber task force, ensuring proactive monitoring of potential digital threats.

A Tense Climate of Uncertainty and Preparation

The post-2020 election climate has led to unprecedented security measures for the 2024 election. Portland, Oregon, and other cities have seen law enforcement beef up staffing for Election Day, with Portland’s unified command team increasing police presence as a precaution. Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler acknowledged the heightened tension, noting that while there is no current information to suggest unrest, the city remains vigilant in ensuring a peaceful election process.

Following the January 6, 2021, Capitol incident, law enforcement agencies across the nation are taking proactive steps to safeguard Election Day and prevent disruptions. In Washington, D.C., over 3,000 officers will be deployed in 12-hour shifts as part of a comprehensive security plan. Police Chief Pamela A. Smith emphasized the need for preparedness, noting that police chiefs nationwide are coordinating efforts to ensure safety and order.

Law Enforcement Associations Call for Vigilance

Three prominent law enforcement organizations—the Major County Sheriffs of America, the National Sheriffs’ Association, and the Major Cities Chiefs Association—issued a joint statement last month urging citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. Their statement highlighted the need for community involvement, reinforcing the message: “If you see something, say something.”

The statement reflects law enforcement’s push for transparency and public cooperation, encouraging Americans to help maintain peace and security throughout the election period.

Lessons Learned from 2020

The heightened precautions reflect lessons learned from past election cycles. In 2020, Oregon’s then-Governor Kate Brown activated the National Guard in anticipation of unrest, and other states followed suit. With reports of unrest and heightened political tensions, authorities are preparing for every possible scenario in 2024.

The current election has intensified existing concerns over ballot security, election integrity, and civil order. As the National Guard, state police, and local law enforcement agencies prepare for Election Day, officials hope that vigilance and comprehensive planning will prevent potential disruptions.

Moving Forward: Ensuring a Safe Election Process

In today’s charged political landscape, ensuring a fair, secure, and peaceful election process is paramount. As tensions continue to rise, state leaders are acting decisively to uphold voter security and public trust in the electoral process. With troops on standby, extra law enforcement presence, and cybersecurity teams engaged, America’s election infrastructure is prepared to stand firm against any challenges that may arise.

This year’s election is a reminder of the significance of protecting the democratic process, not just from physical threats but also from digital and ideological disruptions. The deployment of the National Guard and additional security measures reflect a collective commitment to maintaining peace and preserving the sanctity of America’s electoral system. As Election Day approaches, the message is clear: every citizen has a role in ensuring a safe and secure democratic process.
