The man involved in the 2016 “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory attack on a Washington, DC, pizza restaurant—wrongly believed to be the center of a pedophile ring—has died after being shot by police in North Carolina during a traffic stop.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Kannapolis Police Department in North Carolina confirmed that Edgar Maddison Welch succumbed to injuries sustained when two officers opened fire after he brandished a handgun during a traffic stop on Saturday.
Welch first gained national attention in 2016 when he drove from his home in North Carolina to the Comet Ping Pong restaurant in Washington, DC. Armed with an assault rifle, he fired shots inside the establishment. While no one was injured, authorities recovered two firearms from the scene and another from Welch’s vehicle.
The attack stemmed from Welch’s intent to “self-investigate” the baseless “Pizzagate” conspiracy theory, which falsely alleged that Hillary Clinton and her campaign chairman, John Podesta, were running a child sex-trafficking ring out of the restaurant’s backrooms.
In 2017, Welch pleaded guilty to charges of assault with a dangerous weapon and transporting a firearm across state lines. In an interview with The New York Times following his conviction, he expressed remorse, saying, “I just wanted to do some good and went about it the wrong way … I regret how I handled the situation.”
According to the police news release, the recent incident occurred around 10 p.m. last Saturday on North Cannon Boulevard. A Kannapolis police officer on patrol noticed a gray 2001 GMC Yukon, which he recognized as being typically driven by someone he had previously arrested and who had an active felony warrant for a probation violation.
After pulling the vehicle over, the officer identified the front seat passenger as the individual with the outstanding warrant. As the officer engaged with the driver, two additional officers arrived to provide backup. The officer who initiated the stop approached the passenger side, opened the front passenger door, and attempted to arrest Welch, who was seated in the front seat.
Police stated that Welch then pulled a handgun from his jacket and pointed it at the officer. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Welch did not comply. In response, the officer and a second officer at the rear of the car fired their weapons, striking Welch.
Welch was transported to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries two days later. The officers involved in the shooting were identified as Brooks Jones and Caleb Tate in the news release.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is currently reviewing the case. Both officers have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.
