During an interview on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Vice President and 2024 Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris responded to criticism that she has flip-flopped on major policy issues like fracking, immigration, and Medicare for All. Harris’s defense? She claimed that she’s been “listening to folks” and trying to find “common ground,” as if Americans will forget her ever-changing stances.
In typical politician fashion, Harris dodged the heart of the criticism. When confronted by interviewer Bill Whitaker about her inconsistent positions, she brushed it off, saying, “What the American people do want is that we have leaders who can build consensus.” But the real question is: Can a leader build consensus if no one knows where they truly stand?
For conservatives, this is just another example of Kamala Harris pandering to whichever crowd she happens to be speaking to. During her vice presidency, Harris initially took a hard stance against fracking—a key issue for Democrats who prioritize the green agenda. But as the political winds shifted, so did Harris. Now, with an eye on moderate voters, she’s all for it. The same goes for her once staunch support of Medicare for All, which she’s now quietly walked back, and her flip-flopping on immigration policies.
Harris claims her shifting stances are all about seeking “common ground” and not compromising values. But how can voters trust a candidate who changes positions based on political convenience? Conservatives have long argued that the Democrats are more interested in political theater than genuine leadership, and Harris’s evasive answers on “60 Minutes” confirm this suspicion.
Her rhetoric on compromise sounds noble, but her record tells a different story. Harris has always played to the far-left base when it suits her, and now, ahead of a tough presidential race, she’s trying to portray herself as a centrist who can unite the country. This kind of political double-dealing is exactly why so many Americans feel disillusioned with Washington. They want leaders who stand by their principles, not those who mold their positions to win elections.
It’s not just conservatives who see through Harris’s act. Many Democrats have also expressed frustration with her lack of consistency. Progressives feel betrayed by her walk-backs on issues like Medicare for All, and moderates don’t trust her sudden shift on issues like fracking. This leaves Harris in a precarious position: alienating her base while failing to win over the centrists she’s trying to court.
Harris claims she’s focused on “commonsense solutions,” but her idea of common sense seems to involve abandoning the very policies she once championed. What does it say about a leader who, in just a few short years, can flip positions on such core issues? It doesn’t signal strength—it signals opportunism.
This interview is yet another example of how out of touch Harris is with everyday Americans. While she talks about compromise and building consensus, millions of hardworking Americans are struggling under the weight of high inflation, energy costs, and border chaos—issues that Harris has failed to address in any meaningful way. Instead of offering clear solutions, she offers vague platitudes and empty promises.

Harris may believe that political flip-flopping is just part of the game, but the American people deserve better. They deserve leaders who are honest about their beliefs and who will stand by their convictions even when it’s not politically expedient. Conservatives have long held that the Democratic Party is more interested in political expediency than principles, and Harris’s answers on “60 Minutes” only reinforce this belief.
In the end, voters are left wondering: What does Kamala Harris really stand for? Is she the anti-fracking, Medicare-for-All progressive she once claimed to be? Or is she the centrist, middle-of-the-road politician she now pretends to be in order to appeal to a broader audience? It’s anyone’s guess, and that’s the problem.
As America gears up for the 2024 election, voters need to keep in mind Harris’s track record of political flip-flopping. It’s one thing to seek compromise, but it’s another thing entirely to compromise your principles. And Harris has shown, time and time again, that she’s willing to do just that for a few extra votes.
Republicans must seize this opportunity to call out Harris’s inconsistent and opportunistic political maneuvers. America deserves a leader who knows where they stand, not one who changes with the political tide.
