The tragic discovery of six hostages, including American-Israeli Hersh Goldberg-Polin, in a tunnel beneath Gaza has sent shockwaves across the world. These hostages were found in Rafah, a city on the Gaza-Egypt border that Vice President Kamala Harris specifically advised Israel not to enter. The bodies were discovered on Saturday, highlighting the grim reality of Hamas’s brutal tactics.
Back in February, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signaled Israel’s readiness to enter Rafah, suspecting it to be a stronghold for Hamas leaders and a possible location where Israeli hostages were being held. Despite this, Vice President Harris, echoing the Biden administration’s stance, cautioned Israel against such action, citing concerns over potential Palestinian civilian casualties and hinting at “consequences” from the U.S., such as withholding weapons.
“I’ve studied the maps,” Harris said at the time, suggesting that Israel’s entry into Rafah would be a strategic mistake. Nevertheless, Israel made the crucial decision to proceed, prioritizing the rescue of hostages and the dismantling of terrorist infrastructure over appeasing Washington. In a carefully executed operation with minimal civilian casualties, Israeli forces have successfully neutralized hundreds of Hamas terrorists in Rafah, although it is believed that some leaders have fled deeper into the Gaza Strip. This mission also led to the rescue of one hostage and the heartbreaking recovery of the bodies of Goldberg-Polin and five others.

In addition to these efforts, Israel has established control over the Philadelphi Corridor, a strategic roadway along the border with Egypt. This vital route had been exploited by Hamas to smuggle weapons and supplies into Gaza. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have since uncovered and destroyed numerous tunnels in the area, effectively cutting off a key supply line for the terrorist organization.
IDF Spokesman Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari reported on Sunday that the six hostages were brutally murdered by Hamas militants as Israeli troops closed in on their location. It is suspected that the intelligence leading to this operation came from a hostage rescued just days before, underscoring the complex and dangerous nature of counterterrorism efforts in the region.

The situation in Rafah starkly contrasts with the Biden administration’s earlier warnings. The decision to enter Rafah has proven to be not only a critical military move but a moral one, aimed at saving innocent lives and combating terror. Kamala Harris’s earlier stance now appears dangerously misguided in light of the hostages’ tragic fate. The American people, and the world at large, must recognize the importance of supporting Israel’s right to defend itself and its citizens from the scourge of terrorism.
