In a disturbing incident at DePaul University in Chicago, two Jewish students were assaulted by masked attackers on Wednesday while visibly expressing their support for Israel. According to a statement released by university President Robert L. Manuel, the students, both men in their 20s, were targeted by unknown individuals who physically attacked them. One student was struck in the face and body, while the other was pushed to the ground. The assailants fled the scene, and both victims declined emergency medical treatment.

The attack has sparked widespread outrage within the university community. “We are outraged that this occurred on our campus,” President Manuel stated. “It is completely unacceptable and a violation of DePaul’s values to uphold and care for the dignity of every individual.” Manuel emphasized that DePaul is actively cooperating with the Chicago Police Department in their investigation, which will determine whether the incident qualifies as a hate crime motivated by the victims’ Jewish identity.

At present, the Chicago Police Department has classified the assault as a case of simple battery. However, the investigation is ongoing. Details about how the students were demonstrating their support for Israel were not immediately available.

Rising Anti-Semitism Amid Global Tensions

This attack comes against the backdrop of heightened tensions in the Middle East, where Israel’s ongoing conflict with Hamas in Gaza has led to a severe humanitarian crisis. The conflict has fueled strong reactions globally, with widespread demonstrations and advocacy from both pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups.

The assault at DePaul University follows another alarming incident in nearby West Rogers Park, where a suspect was charged for attacking a Jewish man who was on his way to a synagogue. Such incidents highlight a troubling rise in anti-Semitic attacks in the United States. Preliminary data from the Anti-Defamation League reveals that threats against Jewish individuals tripled following the deadly October 7 terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas.

University President Vows Accountability

President Manuel has pledged to hold those responsible for the attack accountable, stating, “We will do all we can to hold those responsible accountable for this outrageous incident.” The university’s leadership is determined to ensure the safety and dignity of all its students while collaborating with law enforcement to bring justice.

As tensions continue to escalate both domestically and internationally, the DePaul incident serves as a stark reminder of the need to combat hatred and intolerance wherever it surfaces. For conservative Americans, this assault exemplifies the importance of supporting and defending free expression and religious freedom in the face of rising anti-Semitism and political violence. Holding perpetrators accountable and protecting the fundamental rights of all individuals must remain a top priority.
