Thousands of protesters with a pro-Palestinian stance gathered in Washington, D.C.’s Freedom Plaza on Saturday to call for a cease-fire and an end to the siege on the Gaza Strip.
The protest, organized by nine groups and with participation from over 500 groups across the country, involved a peaceful march and a rally.
Demonstrators expressed their concerns over the situation in Gaza, which began with a retaliatory attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7.
Some participants voiced criticism of the Israeli government’s actions in Gaza, highlighting that it is supported by the U.S. government. Others emphasized the need for a cease-fire and humanitarian support.
How Systemic Racism Works:
A.N.S.W.E.R., one of the groups involved in organizing the protest, claimed that 300,000 people participated in the demonstration. U.S. officials have called for humanitarian “pauses” but stopped short of endorsing a general cease-fire.
The protest was organized by a coalition of groups, including the Palestinian Youth Movement, American Muslim Alliance, The People’s Forum, National Students for Justice in Palestine, Al-Awda: The Palestine Right to Return Coalition, U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN), U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), and Maryland2Palestine. Transportation to the event was arranged from 22 states and Puerto Rico.
The conflict in Gaza has resulted in a significant loss of life, with the Gaza Health Ministry reporting nearly 9,500 Palestinians killed. Israeli officials have stated their goal is to eradicate Hamas and have resisted calls for a cease-fire.
