In what can only be described as the epitome of political insanity, Democrats are seriously entertaining the idea of Andrew Cuomo running for mayor of New York City. This is the same Andrew Cuomo who resigned in disgrace as governor in 2021 amidst multiple allegations of sexual harassment, mismanagement of COVID-19, and the underreporting of nursing home deaths. Yet here we are, with some Jewish activists and mainstream Democrats rallying behind Cuomo as if none of this ever happened.

Cuomo, a man with a tarnished legacy, is now being considered as a “moderate” savior for New York City. According to several Jewish community leaders, Cuomo’s past support for Israel and his track record of combating antisemitism have kept him in good standing with certain segments of the Jewish population. But let’s not forget, this is the same man who ran the state of New York into the ground with his horrendous COVID-19 policies, including his now-infamous order that nursing homes accept COVID-positive patients—an order that many believe led to the deaths of thousands of vulnerable seniors.

Yet, despite these glaring issues, prominent Jewish organizers are hoping Cuomo will jump into the race. One Jewish advocate even declared, “Cuomo will immediately be the top candidate in the Jewish community.” This is truly baffling. How can anyone, let alone a significant voting bloc, support a man who has so thoroughly betrayed the public trust?

This bizarre development comes at a time when current Mayor Eric Adams is facing his own political struggles. Adams appeared in court recently on sweeping corruption charges, and even his most ardent supporters are beginning to doubt whether he can survive politically. Michael Nussbaum, former president of the Queens Jewish Council, expressed his skepticism, saying, “I’m skeptical that Eric can survive and make it to next year’s election.” He added, shockingly, that he would support Andrew Cuomo, claiming, “We know he can manage and govern.”

Really? Manage and govern? Let’s take a moment to remember how Cuomo managed New York during the height of the pandemic. His administration was caught underreporting the number of COVID-related deaths in nursing homes, all while he was busy securing a $5 million book deal to praise his own leadership during the crisis. How can anyone look at this man and say, “We know he can govern”? It’s utter lunacy.

Even if Adams does resign or is ousted, what kind of message would Democrats be sending by rallying behind someone like Cuomo? The message is clear: Allegations of sexual harassment, deadly COVID-19 mismanagement, and corruption don’t matter to the liberal establishment as long as you toe the party line.

But it gets worse. Cuomo, if he were to run, would be challenging candidates like Brad Lander, the city’s highest-ranking Jewish elected official and a self-described “progressive Zionist.” Lander is known for his far-left views, including his opposition to Israel’s military actions against Hamas. So, in the twisted world of Democratic politics, voters are left with the “choice” between a far-left progressive who sides with Israel’s enemies and a disgraced former governor who left behind a trail of scandal and death.

It’s hard to decide which is more outrageous: that Brad Lander, who opposes Israel’s right to defend itself, is considered a serious candidate for mayor, or that Cuomo, with all his baggage, is viewed as a viable “moderate” alternative. Lander’s positions on Israel may resonate with the most radical fringes of the Democratic Party, but they have alienated him from mainstream Jewish voters. His support for Israel’s enemies and participation in anti-Israel rallies have left many Jewish leaders deeply concerned.

Jewish voters make up about 20% to 25% of the Democratic primary vote, according to voter data analyst Jerry Skurnik. This significant voting bloc helped Adams secure his win in 2021, largely due to his strong stance against antisemitism. But as Adams’ legal troubles deepen, Jewish leaders are looking for a new candidate who can govern from the center—though their support for Cuomo seems like a desperate and misguided attempt to fill the void left by Adams.

The sheer audacity of considering Cuomo for mayor is a testament to the moral bankruptcy of the Democratic Party. This is a man who left office in disgrace, yet Democrats are so bereft of decent candidates that they’re willing to look the other way and give him another shot at power.

Cuomo’s potential comeback will no doubt face opposition from those who remember his catastrophic leadership during the pandemic and the numerous women who accused him of sexual harassment. But in a special election, where anyone can vote, Cuomo might actually have a shot—if only because the Democratic Party has sunk so low that even a disgraced former governor is seen as a “better” option than a far-left radical.

This is the state of New York politics in 2024: a choice between corruption, incompetence, and radicalism. And somehow, Andrew Cuomo, of all people, is being positioned as the least terrible option. It’s a sad and deeply disturbing reflection of where the Democratic Party is today.

New York City deserves better than this, and it’s time for voters to wake up to the insanity that is unfolding before their eyes.
