Over 300 soldiers from the Illinois National Guard, along with their families, are gearing up for deployment to the Middle East this Saturday.

The mobilization took place at Wintrust Arena, where Major Gen. Rodney Boyd encouraged the troops, stating, “You’re ready. You’re ready. Showtime.”

The deployment is in support of Operation Spartan Shield, and among the soldiers is Staff Sgt. Adam Raynor from St. John, Indiana, who expressed readiness for his first deployment.

Despite feeling a mix of anxiety and excitement, Raynor acknowledged the comprehensive training they received.

Many in the unit are deploying for the first time, leading to a blend of emotions about leaving their families. Staff Sgt. Monn Escalona, on his second deployment, emphasized the added difficulty of leaving behind an entire family compared to his first deployment when he only left his wife in Waukegan.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker commended the soldiers for their readiness, stating, “I take special pride upon deployments, knowing that your readiness is second to none in the nation.

You are the best.” U.S. Sen. Tammy Duckworth, a combat veteran, acknowledged the dangers the soldiers are facing and expressed gratitude for their sacrifice, emphasizing the unique flavor of freedom experienced by those in uniform.

Despite the challenges of leaving loved ones behind, the soldiers reiterated their commitment to serving the country.

Staff Sgt. Escalona emphasized the significance of serving the “beautiful country,” while Staff Sgt. Raynor assured, “We are here for you guys. We’re going to do our best out there.”
