Israel’s plan to attack Rafah, in the southern Gaza Strip, seemed to be approaching as the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) urged residents to evacuate to designated safe zones. The IDF intensified its efforts to alert civilians through flyers, SMS messages, phone calls, and Arabic media broadcasts.

The call for evacuation followed a serious incident on Saturday when Hamas fired rockets at the Kerem Shalom crossing, where humanitarian aid flows from Israel into Gaza, killing four Israeli soldiers and injuring several others. This attack marked a significant escalation, prompting the IDF to prepare for an attack on Rafah, where some of Hamas’s last strongholds are believed to be located.

Rafah is a strategically important location, as it sits on the southern edge of Gaza, adjacent to Egypt. It is also a critical point for Hamas, with underground tunnels used for smuggling weapons and potentially offering escape routes for their leaders.

The United States has advised Israel to refrain from attacking Rafah, emphasizing the need to prioritize a hostage deal over a military operation. Israel, however, has expressed its determination to eradicate Hamas, stating that military action will continue regardless of international pressure or ongoing hostage negotiations. The IDF has made clear that its priority is the complete dismantling of Hamas, and it intends to pursue this objective until all hostages are released and Hamas’s power is destroyed.

To mitigate civilian casualties, the IDF expanded the humanitarian area in Al-Mawasi, offering field hospitals, tents, food, water, and medical supplies. The IDF’s flyers outlined evacuation routes and warned civilians to avoid combat zones, emphasizing that anyone found in areas with terrorist activity risked endangering themselves and their families. The IDF’s maps showed expanded humanitarian areas for civilians to seek refuge during operations.

Despite these efforts, international concern remains high due to the potential humanitarian crisis that could ensue from an attack on Rafah. CIA Director William Burns was in the region, attempting to mediate a possible hostage deal and prevent a full-scale assault. However, talks appeared to have stalled, with Hamas demanding a commitment from Israel to end the war as part of any agreement.

This deadlock has put additional pressure on Israel, especially after the deadly Hamas attack on Kerem Shalom, which further inflamed public opinion. While most Israelis support an operation in Rafah, there is a divide over whether the attack should happen before or after a hostage deal is reached.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s statement on Holocaust Memorial Day added to the intensity of the situation, indicating that Israel would stand alone if necessary to defend itself. His message seemed directed toward U.S. President Joe Biden, signaling Israel’s intent to proceed with military action despite U.S. cautions.

As the IDF gears up for a possible assault on Rafah, the international community watches closely, aware of the implications for both the civilian population in Gaza and the broader geopolitical landscape.
