During the Halloween season, it’s common to find decorative skulls in stores, typically mass-produced in factories.
However, an unexpected discovery occurred at a thrift store in Fort Myers, Florida, when a vigilant shopper noticed that one of the skulls displayed in the Halloween section was not a typical replica.
According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, this shopper, an anthropologist with expertise in the field, immediately recognized that the skull was genuine, belonging to a human being.
This observation prompted the involvement of detectives.

Anthropologists come in various specialties; some focus on cultural aspects, while others, such as forensic anthropologists, specialize in the identification and analysis of human remains.
Upon close examination, detectives concurred that the skull was indeed human. Subsequently, they took possession of the skull and transferred it to the District 21 Medical Examiner’s Office for further assessment. The store owner informed deputies that the skull had been discovered within a storage unit purchased years ago and had remained untouched and forgotten ever since.
