In a shocking turn of events that has left many citizens reeling, a woman lacking the basic right to vote in the United States has been inaugurated into San Francisco’s Elections Commission.

This revelation has sparked outrage and disbelief across the nation, as citizens grapple with the implications of such a decision.

According to a report by the Northern California public news site KQED, Kelly Wong, an immigrant hailing from Hong Kong, has been appointed to the commission, marking a historic departure from traditional norms.

Wong, who arrived in the U.S. in 2019 to pursue her academic aspirations, has become the first noncitizen to hold such a position following San Francisco’s controversial measure in 2020, which abolished the citizenship requirement for serving on city boards and commissions.

The ceremony, held at San Francisco City Hall, saw Wong being sworn in by Board of Supervisors president Aaron Peskin amidst a crowd of onlookers. The fact that Wong, a noncitizen, was unanimously voted in by the Board of Supervisors raises serious questions about the integrity and rationale behind such a decision.

In an interview with KQED, Wong candidly shared her journey and the doubts she had to overcome to attain her position. The audacity of appointing a noncitizen to a role that directly impacts the democratic process is nothing short of alarming. Wong’s statements about battling self-doubt underscore the gravity of the situation and the disregard for the sanctity of citizenship.

Peskin’s commendation of Wong’s efforts to engage and empower noncitizens only adds insult to injury. By lauding Wong’s commitment to enfranchising individuals who lack the fundamental right to vote, Peskin is effectively endorsing a system that undermines the very principles of democracy.

Wong’s advocacy for immigrant rights and her purported goal of educating noncitizens about the voting process reeks of irony and hypocrisy. How can someone who is not even a citizen of this country presume to educate others about their civic duties and responsibilities?

The sheer audacity of Wong’s appointment is further exemplified by her remarks regarding the challenges faced by immigrants, particularly those with limited English proficiency, in navigating the voting process. While her empathy may be genuine, it does not negate the fact that she lacks the legal standing to represent the interests of American citizens.

The revelation that there isn’t an equivalent term for “reparations” in Cantonese or Mandarin only underscores the cultural and linguistic barriers that exist. While Wong may serve as a resource for some immigrants, her role on the Elections Commission should not be misconstrued as a solution to systemic issues of accessibility and inclusivity.

San Francisco Election Commission President Robin Stone’s tepid response to the controversy only adds insult to injury. By blindly endorsing Wong’s appointment as a reflection of the will of San Francisco voters, Stone fails to acknowledge the broader implications of allowing a noncitizen to hold such a critical position.

In conclusion, the appointment of Kelly Wong to San Francisco’s Elections Commission represents a grave miscarriage of justice and a blatant disregard for the principles of democracy. It is incumbent upon citizens to demand accountability and transparency from their elected officials and to vehemently oppose any attempts to undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
