Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer who was convicted in connection with the death of George Floyd, reportedly survived an attack in an Arizona prison on Friday, as stated by a representative from the Minnesota Attorney General’s office.

Earlier on Friday, the Associated Press had disclosed that Chauvin was stabbed and sustained serious injuries.

Expressing concern over the incident, Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison conveyed his sentiments in a statement on Saturday, saying, “I am saddened to learn about the violence directed at Derek Chauvin. While he has been duly convicted of his crimes, it is crucial, like any incarcerated individual, that he serves his sentence without apprehension of retaliation or harm.”

However, Ellison refrained from providing additional details regarding the attack.

On Sunday, Brian Evans, a spokesperson for the Attorney General’s Office, issued a statement regarding Chauvin’s condition, stating, “We have received information indicating that he is expected to survive.”

Chauvin is currently serving a 21-year federal sentence for violating George Floyd’s civil rights, alongside a concurrent 22-and-a-half-year term for murder in the Minnesota state court.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed an assault on an unidentified inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona.

According to the bureau, employees initiated life-saving measures for the individual, who was subsequently transported to a hospital by emergency medical services. The Bureau of Prisons declined to disclose the victim’s identity or medical status, citing privacy concerns.

The tragic death of George Floyd in 2020 had sparked global protests against police brutality and racism after Chauvin, a white police officer, was captured on cellphone video kneeling on the neck of the handcuffed Black man for over nine minutes.
