Ever since the public found out Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid would be race-swapping the title character, Ariel, it has been met with controversy.

As Disney’s live-action remakes have become more ‘diverse and progressive’, some purists who cherish the classic 1989 animated film were not in favor of a less faithful adaptation of the story.

However, many in the media used this as an opportunity to accuse right-wing viewers of racism while cashing in on woke audiences eager for anti-racist content.

Despite all the hype surrounding The Little Mermaid, it failed to meet expectations among critics according to its 67% rating from Rotten Tomatoes.

And while its audience score is higher at 95%, these reviews appear to be bogus and skewed by fake reviews, which may not accurately reflect how viewers truly feel about it.

But regardless of what people actually think about the movie, media outlets are choosing to present it as a success by highlighting its box office haul over Memorial Day weekend.

The Associated Press reported that The Little Mermaid brought in $95.5 million on 4,320 screens in North America and will likely reach $117.5 million by the end of the holiday weekend – making it the fifth-biggest Memorial Day opening ever.

However, when compared to other films it does not fare quite so well; The Super Mario Bros Movie made more than double what The Little Mermaid did over the same period of time – bringing in a total domestic box office of $204 million.

Regardless of any actual accomplishments or accolades earned by Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid – or lack thereof – there’s no denying that this reboot has made waves throughout Hollywood and beyond simply due to its controversial casting choices.

And although this movie didn’t break any records or make history as some reports claim – there is no doubt that Disney will take a self-righteous victory lap and fulfill the need for the woke left audiences to virtue signal at theaters around the world.
