CHICAGO—In a disturbing continuation of Chicago’s escalating gun violence crisis, two teenage boys were shot in the city’s West Town neighborhood early Sunday morning, marking yet another incident in a year already plagued by violent crime. The shooting took place just after 2 a.m. on the 400 block of North Milwaukee Avenue, leaving an 18-year-old in critical condition and a 17-year-old recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg.
According to police, the 18-year-old was sitting in his vehicle when he heard gunshots and realized he had been struck multiple times. Emergency personnel from the Chicago Fire Department rushed to the scene, stabilizing him before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. The 17-year-old, who had been leaving a music studio when approached by four armed suspects, managed to reach a hospital on his own and is currently in good condition. Meanwhile, the suspects fled the scene, and no arrests have been made as Area Three detectives continue their investigation.
A Year of Violence: Chicago’s Alarming Gun Crime Statistics
Chicago’s gun violence epidemic has reached disturbing new heights in 2024. Over the past ten months, the city has seen a relentless spike in shootings, with nearly 2,000 people shot so far this year. Many of these incidents have taken place in neighborhoods historically plagued by violence, but an increasing number are occurring in areas like West Town, which were once considered safer.

The Chicago Police Department reports that shootings involving young victims have surged, with teens and even children frequently caught in the crossfire. In just the first three quarters of 2024, over 200 juveniles have been injured or killed in gun-related incidents. These statistics are not just numbers—they represent real families devastated by loss and entire communities living in fear.
Crime by the Numbers: Chicago’s Startling 2024 Shooting Stats
As of October, the following statistics highlight the grim reality of Chicago’s 2024 crime surge:
- Nearly 2,000 total shooting victims, marking a rise from previous years.
- Over 500 homicides, many involving gun violence.
- At least 200 minors injured or killed in shootings across the city.
This troubling trend has placed Chicago among the most dangerous major cities in America, with homicides and violent crimes outpacing other large metropolitan areas.
Calls for Action Grow Louder
For Chicago residents, particularly those in communities hit hardest by gun violence, the situation is unbearable. Local leaders, law enforcement officials, and community groups are increasingly vocal about the urgent need for effective action to restore public safety. Conservative lawmakers are pointing to the crisis as evidence that tougher policies on crime and policing are necessary to address the issues facing Chicago and similar cities nationwide.
Community organizations are also calling for more targeted support and resources to address the root causes of violence and are demanding accountability from city leaders. While Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and city officials have pledged to tackle the problem, many residents feel that promises have not yet translated into concrete, effective actions to curb the violence.
The Toll on the Community
For families impacted by these shootings, every incident serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing crisis. Chicago’s citizens are calling for meaningful change, hoping to prevent further loss of life and ensure that young people in their communities are not condemned to live in fear.
Sunday morning’s shooting of two teens in West Town underscores the pressing need for stronger measures and sustained efforts to end the city’s epidemic of violence. The question remains whether city leadership will take decisive action to prioritize the safety of Chicago’s neighborhoods and stop the rising tide of gun violence that continues to devastate communities month after month.
