A murder charge has been filed against a Texas man accused of assuming a false identity as a minor to arrange a meeting and subsequently kill a convicted sex offender, as per authorities.

According to the Houston Police Department, on May 29, 2023, James Spencer III, 22, allegedly shot and killed 37-year-old Sean Connery Showers. The incident occurred when Showers approached a vehicle during the early morning hours, and the unidentified suspect shot him. After further investigation, the police arrested Spencer, who reportedly confessed to the murder.

Showers was discovered in a ditch with multiple gunshot wounds, according to law enforcement.

Sources such as Click 2 Houston and ABC 13, citing authorities, reveal that Spencer purportedly misrepresented himself online as a minor to entice Showers, who was believed to be a sex offender, with the pretense of a sexual encounter.

In 2009, Showers pleaded guilty to possessing child sex abuse material, and he served a 30-month prison sentence. In 2019, he received an additional two-year sentence for failing to register as a sex offender, federal authorities stated at the time.

During a press conference aired by ABC 13, prosecutor Rehaman Merchant asserted that Spencer orchestrated a meeting and was aware of Showers’ whereabouts on the night of the murder.

Merchant emphasized the importance of adhering to the legal system, stating, “Regardless of the likability of the victim, we’re a nation of laws. So no one gets to be judge, jury, and executioner depending on how they feel.”
