I am so sick and tired of the daily doom scrolling clickbait on social media, and from publications like “Breitbart” who use “BOMBSHELL” and “BREAKING” in every single one of their articles, with NOTHING EVER HAPPENING FROM THEM!

In the latest episode of political theatrics, House Oversight Committee chairman Rep. Barry Loudermilk (R-GA) has hinted at referring members of the January 6 Committee to the Department of Justice for criminal prosecution. But forgive me if I don’t hold my breath waiting for anything to come of it.

Loudermilk’s crusade stems from his purported discovery last year that the January 6 Committee had allegedly destroyed documents and other records. According to Loudermilk, despite warnings from then-incoming Speaker of the House Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to preserve all evidence collected during months of investigations and closed-door testimony, the committee allegedly went ahead and trashed crucial materials.

In an interview with John Solomon of JusttheNews.com, Loudermilk floated the idea of potential prosecutions, stating that former lawmakers and staff of the now-defunct Democrat-run Jan. 6 committee could be in hot water for their actions. He expressed frustration over the deletion, destruction, or relocation of videotapes, transcripts, and other evidence gathered by Congress under the prior inquiry led by Democrats.

However, while Loudermilk talks tough about holding individuals accountable, he also acknowledges that it might be a while before any real action is taken. He emphasizes the need for more information to be gathered and for the truth to be unveiled to the American people. Yet, in the realm of Washington politics, promises of accountability often fall short of fruition, buried under layers of bureaucracy and partisan bickering.

Loudermilk’s suggestion that censure or ethical sanctions could be applied instead of prosecution highlights the complexities of holding members of Congress accountable for their actions. With the immunity often afforded to lawmakers due to the separation of powers enshrined in the U.S. Constitution, the road to justice can be long and arduous.

From the perspective of those who view January 6th as a mostly peaceful protest, Loudermilk’s efforts may seem like a futile attempt to score political points. To them, the continued focus on the events of that day appears to be little more than a distraction from more pressing issues facing the nation.

While it’s undeniable that the events of January 6th were troubling and warrant investigation, the hyperbolic rhetoric surrounding the incident has often overshadowed more nuanced discussions about the root causes of political unrest in America. By framing the events of that day as an insurrection rather than a protest gone awry, the media and political elites risk further inflaming tensions and deepening divisions within the country.

Should parents talk to their kids about race and violence?

In the grand scheme of things, Loudermilk’s threats of referrals to the Department of Justice may amount to little more than political posturing. With the current state of partisan gridlock in Washington, it’s unlikely that any meaningful action will be taken against members of the January 6 Committee, regardless of their alleged wrongdoing.

So forgive me if I remain skeptical of Loudermilk’s intentions. In a town where bombshells and breaking news are a dime a dozen, it’s all too easy for promises of accountability to fade into the background noise of the never-ending political circus. Until real action is taken, it’s all just empty rhetoric and political theater.
