Allyssa Victory, an advocate for criminal justice and an ACLU attorney who once ran for Oakland mayor, shared her recent experience of being caught in gunfire along with her family. Thankfully, despite bullets penetrating the walls of their home, no one was injured.

Describing the incident, Victory mentioned that such occurrences were unfortunately common in her neighborhood, where the constant sound of sirens and chaos is the norm. Despite the familiarity, the proximity of this incident to her own home was unsettling. She expressed gratitude that her family emerged unharmed.

The incident took place around 10:30 p.m. on a Friday, while Victory and her family were cleaning up in the kitchen. They heard what seemed like 10 gunshots on their block of 21st Avenue in the San Antonio neighborhood. Bullets struck their home, with one whizzing into the dining room and another passing through the kitchen wall.

Victory recounted how the bullets caused debris to spread across dishes they had just washed, leaving them feeling rattled. After ensuring the safety of her family, she inspected the damage to her home and discovered a significant police presence at the scene within a minute of the shooting.

According to Oakland police, the gunfire occurred in the 2100 block of Commerce Way, and an individual walked into a hospital, claiming to have been shot. No arrests have been made in connection to the incident.
