Since the beginning of President Joe Biden’s administration in 2021, the southern border has become a focal point of national debate and state-level action. At the forefront of this response is Texas Governor Greg Abbott, whose policies aim to curb the flow of migrants entering the Lone Star State. Through executive orders, legal battles, and innovative approaches, Abbott’s initiatives have had a significant impact on the dynamics at the US-Mexico border.

Operation Lone Star: Texas Steps In

Governor Abbott launched Operation Lone Star in early 2021 as a direct response to the Biden administration’s reversal of several Trump-era border policies. The shift in federal policy was rapid and notable, creating a new set of challenges for border states like Texas. Abbott’s response involved deploying thousands of state and National Guard troops to the Rio Grande, aiming to deter migrants from crossing into Texas. The presence of these forces on the ground is a key component of Texas’ border security strategy.

One of the most controversial aspects of Abbott’s border policy has been the busing of migrants to liberal sanctuary cities in Democrat-led states. Since the program began, over 112,700 migrants have been transported to cities across the United States. The numbers are striking: over 42,500 to New York City, over 34,700 to Chicago, over 18,100 to Denver, over 12,500 to Washington DC, over 3,400 to Philadelphia, and over 1,500 to Los Angeles. The goal, according to Abbott, is to share the burden of the immigration crisis and pressure the federal government to take action.

In a post on X, Governor Abbott stated, “We will continue until President Biden secures the border.” The busing program has garnered national attention, with mixed reactions from political leaders, activists, and citizens. While some view it as a necessary step to address the immigration crisis, others criticize it as a disruptive and politically charged tactic.

Legal Battles and Razor Wire

To further bolster Texas’ efforts to control the border, Abbott has used every legal tool at his disposal. Attorney General Ken Paxton has repeatedly taken the Biden administration to court, challenging federal policies and advocating for Texas’ right to enforce its own border security measures. This includes the use of razor wire along the Rio Grande and the enforcement of SB 4, a newly passed law that grants law enforcement the authority to arrest and deport illegal immigrants on a judge’s orders.

According to reports from The Texas Tribune, 43 percent of all migrant encounters along the border have occurred in Texas since October. This high number underscores the state’s central role in the broader immigration issue. Governor Abbott, however, is clear that this number is still unacceptable and indicates a need for continued action to protect Texas’ sovereignty.

The Impact on Migration Patterns

Governor Abbott’s border policies appear to be shifting migration patterns. According to statements from Andrew Mahaleris, a spokesman for the governor, the increased security in Texas is pushing more migrants to cross into other states along the border. “The vast majority of the United States’ southern border is in Texas, and because of Texas’ efforts to secure the border, more migrants are moving west to illegally cross the border into other states,” Mahaleris said in a statement.

This shift suggests that Abbott’s approach is affecting the broader landscape of border security and immigration enforcement. However, the enduring question remains: what will it take for the federal government to step in and implement comprehensive border security measures?

A Complex Issue with No Easy Solutions

The crisis at the southern border is complex and multifaceted, involving issues of immigration policy, national security, humanitarian concerns, and political strategy. Governor Abbott’s policies have certainly made an impact, but they are not without controversy. As Texas continues to push forward with its border security efforts, the broader question of federal action and comprehensive immigration reform looms large. The path forward will require collaboration, compromise, and a clear vision for addressing the root causes of migration while ensuring the security and integrity of the US border.
