In a statement following the initial misdemeanor charge, Bowman expressed gratitude for the swift resolution by the District of Columbia Attorney General’s office and the acknowledgment by the United States Capitol Police General Counsel’s office that he did not obstruct or intend to obstruct any House vote or proceedings.

He accepted responsibility for pulling the fire alarm, agreeing to pay the issued fine and expressing his hope that the charges would ultimately be dropped.

Bowman also anticipated that his political opponents might attempt to exploit this incident for distractions, but he remained committed to serving his constituents in New York.

After appearing in court on Thursday, Bowman expressed regret that Capitol Police resources had to be deployed to respond to the incident and expressed relief that no one was harmed. He acknowledged the confusion and disturbance caused by his actions, describing them as embarrassing.

Under the terms of his plea agreement, Bowman’s next court appearance is scheduled for January, but prosecutors are expected to request the court date be vacated.

In accordance with the plea agreement, Bowman will be required to pay a maximum fine of $1,000, write a letter of apology to Capitol Police Chief Tom Manger, and serve three months of probation.

Court documents revealed that Bowman knowingly pulled the fire alarm in the Cannon House office building on September 30 while the House was in the midst of a crucial government funding vote.

Security camera footage reviewed by Capitol Police indicated that Bowman examined the doors with signs reading “Emergency Exit Only Push Until Alarm Sounds” and, when finding them locked, proceeded to activate the fire alarm, according to court documents.

The complaint also noted that Bowman failed to inform Capitol Police officers that he was responsible for the fire alarm activation as he walked past them.

Four minutes after activating the alarm, he entered the Capitol.

In previous statements, Bowman claimed the incident was an “innocent mistake” and that he was unaware it would trigger a building-wide alarm.

During the Capitol Police investigation, Bowman explained that the door he pulled was typically left unlocked during votes, and he did not disclose his involvement in the fire alarm incident to avoid missing the crucial vote on government funding.

Nevertheless, some Republicans accused Bowman of deliberately delaying the vote to grant more time for Democrats to support government funding, an accusation he denied.

In his remarks following the court proceedings, Bowman expressed his gratitude for the agreement in place, described the court proceedings as a step toward putting the incident behind him, and reiterated his commitment to focusing on his work for his district.
