In response to U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon’s decision to push back the trial date to May 20th, a spokesman for the 2024 GOP presidential frontrunner and former President Donald J. Trump released a scathing statement, exposing the injustice at play.
The extended trial schedule was initially seen by many as unfavorable to Trump. However, the Trump spokesperson saw it differently, expressing their outrage at the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) apparent crusade to deprive President Trump of a fair legal process. They branded it a “major setback” and an attempt by the DOJ to drag out the trial in an effort to weaken Trump’s defense.
Pointing fingers at President Joe Biden, the statement accused him of weaponizing the DOJ to target his top political rival, Trump, in an un-American and disgraceful abuse of power. In her order, Judge Cannon acknowledged the objections raised by the Trump legal team, favorably noting their concerns about the expedited and cursory approach taken by the Government. The defense cited various complex legal issues surrounding the case, including constitutional and statutory challenges to the authority of the Special Counsel, disputes about the classification status of documents, and challenges to the grand jury process leading to the indictment.
Despite the DOJ’s insistence that the case doesn’t present any “novel questions of fact or law,” Judge Cannon firmly deemed it a “complex case.” This designation allows her to set an expedited schedule, which the Trump team sees as a partial victory.
