Country singer Jason Aldean addressed the criticism surrounding his song, “Try That in a Small Town,” which some left-wing activists accused of promoting lynching and highlighting the Black Lives Matter riots and growing lawlessness in American cities during 2020.

In a statement shared on Instagram, Aldean expressed his frustration with the accusations: “In the past 24 hours, I have been accused of releasing a pro-lynching song (a song that has been out since May) and was subject to the comparison that I (direct quote) was not too pleased with the nationwide BLM protests. These references are not only meritless but dangerous.”

He clarified that his song contains no lyrics referencing race or supporting any racial violence. The accompanying video features real news footage but does not endorse violence or lawlessness. Aldean acknowledged that interpretations of music can vary, but he felt some interpretations went too far.

Aldean, who experienced the tragic Route 91 incident and has recently witnessed another heartbreaking tragedy within his community, expressed his desire to avoid senseless headlines and families being torn apart. He explained that “Try That In A Small Town” is a reflection of the sense of community he experienced while growing up—a place where neighbors cared for each other despite their differences.

The country star acknowledged that he has never hidden his political views and recognizes that there are differing opinions on how to achieve a sense of normalcy without being constantly burdened by distressing headlines. He concluded that the song represents a longing for a peaceful and harmonious society.

The controversy arose due to the song’s recently released music video, which addresses riots and rising lawlessness in the United States.
