According to recent reports by Action News, the individual responsible for the indiscriminate shooting that occurred in Philadelphia on Monday night, resulting in five fatalities and four injuries, has been identified as Kimbrady Carriker, a 40-year-old resident of the Belmar Terrace area.
The suspect, who resides only a few blocks away from the crime scene, is anticipated to face multiple charges of murder, as stated by District Attorney Larry Krasner during a press conference on Tuesday afternoon.
Sources reveal that prior to the shooting, Carriker had made alarming posts on social media. The suspect was reported to have been wearing a bulletproof vest during the incident and possessed the firearms used in the mass shooting. It should be noted that Carriker had previous encounters with law enforcement, having faced misdemeanor drug and gun charges in 2003, which resulted in probation.
The Philadelphia Police have released the names of the deceased victims as follows: Daujan Brown (15 years old, gender unknown, residence unknown), Lashyd Merritt (22 years old, from the 5500 block of Greenway Ave.), Dymir Stanton (29 years old, from the 1700 block of S. Frazier St.), Joseph Wamah, Jr. (31 years old, from the 1600 block of S. 56th St.), and Ralph Moralis (59 years old, from the 1700 block of S. 56th St.). Additionally, two children, a 2-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy, sustained gunshot wounds, while another 2-year-old boy and a 33-year-old woman were injured by shattered glass. The injured woman is the mother of the twins and was driving them when the shooting occurred.
During the press conference, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw expressed her dismay at the appalling and horrifying events that took place in the Kingsessing neighborhood, emphasizing the need for swift action and justice. The incident unfolded around 8:30 p.m. on the evening preceding Independence Day in the vicinity of 56th Street and Chester Avenue in the southwestern part of the city. Numerous individuals contacted emergency services to report the shooting, while others sought assistance from police officers at the scene.
Law enforcement authorities are currently reviewing video evidence believed to capture the suspect firing shots on South 56th Street. Approximately 50 shots were discharged during the incident, resulting in damage to multiple vehicles. Upon arrival, officers discovered victims with gunshot wounds and promptly arranged transportation to the hospital. As they were attending to the victims, the sound of additional gunfire prompted the officers to move towards the source, leading to their encounter with Carriker.
Police officers managed to pursue and corner the suspect in the rear alley of 1600 Frazier Street. Carriker was found wearing a bulletproof vest, in possession of multiple magazines, a police scanner, an AR-style rifle, and a handgun, according to investigators.
At present, there is no known connection between the victims and the shooter, and investigators are yet to determine the motive behind the shooting. The revelation that a neighbor, who was regarded positively by those in the community, stands accused of perpetrating this violence has shocked local residents. Mayor Jim Kenney expressed the urgent need for national introspection on the issue of firearm accessibility for dangerous individuals, emphasizing the disgraceful nature of such incidents, which are regrettably common in the United States.
The devastating news of the fatalities deeply affected family members, as evidenced by the emotional scene outside Penn Presbyterian Medical Center on Monday night. Marie, the mother of Lashyd Merritt, the 22-year-old victim, expressed her profound grief and disbelief, recounting her pain and the realization that her youngest child will never return home.
Leaders at the state and local levels visited the affected neighborhood on Tuesday morning to provide support to grieving families and residents. The entire community, including survivors and bereaved individuals like Marie, continues to grapple with fear, distress, and unanswered questions, mourning the untimely loss of loved ones.
