The ongoing five-year investigation by the Justice Department into Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, is nearing its end with the announcement of a plea deal.

This agreement is expected to prevent Hunter Biden from going to prison. However, despite this development, congressional Republicans continue to accuse the president and his family of corruption.

Republican lawmakers recently released transcripts from two IRS whistleblowers who claimed that the Justice Department obstructed their efforts to impose stricter penalties on Hunter Biden. These allegations contradict statements made by the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney who handled the case.

These new whistleblower claims add to previous investigations conducted by the Republican-led House Oversight Committee, led by Rep. James Comer, which has yielded few significant results thus far.

The White House has repeatedly downplayed these Republican accusations, dismissing them as baseless attempts to harm President Biden’s political reputation. The Justice Department also rejected the claims made by the IRS whistleblowers.

Instead of alleviating Republican concerns about Hunter Biden, the plea deal negotiated by his lawyers with federal prosecutors seems to have further energized lawmakers’ efforts to target the Biden family.

Republican leaders criticized the agreement, which still requires approval from a federal judge, as a “sweetheart” deal that undermines public trust in the criminal justice system.

Here are some recent claims made by Republicans, along with the known facts and what remains uncertain.

Regarding an allegation that Hunter Biden used his father’s political connections to threaten a Chinese business associate in a 2017 WhatsApp message, Republicans emphasize that it contradicts President Biden’s assertion that he never discussed his son’s overseas business endeavors.

The White House reiterated that the president was not involved in business dealings with his son. At the time of the alleged message, Joe Biden had already ended his term as vice president and held no political office. It’s worth noting that Hunter Biden has a history of using the family name to secure business deals without his father’s knowledge.

Hunter Biden’s lead attorney, Chris Clark, condemned the GOP’s leaks as biased and politically motivated, stating that any words or actions attributed to his client during his addiction should not be associated with the rest of his family.

The committee’s release of other records appears to conflict with the broader claim that President Biden actively participated in Hunter Biden’s business ventures. For example, an IRS whistleblower reported that one of Hunter Biden’s business associates, Rob Walker, said he never thought the vice president was involved in their activities.

Republicans have also focused on an alleged criminal scheme involving then-Vice President Biden and a foreign national exchanging money for policy decisions.

However, the redacted document they reviewed provided little substantive information, and the claims have been labeled as recycled conspiracy theories. The Trump-era Justice Department previously investigated these claims and closed the assessment in August 2020.

High-ranking Republicans expressed frustration over Hunter Biden’s plea deal, criticizing the Trump-appointed U.S. attorney, David Weiss, who brokered the agreement. They believe it demonstrates a biased criminal justice system that favors Democrats. Comer and Jordan expressed interest in calling Weiss to testify before Congress. Weiss previously declined their request for documents and information, citing an ongoing investigation.

Attorney General Merrick Garland stated that he supports Weiss explaining or testifying about the matter when he deems it appropriate. He emphasized that the Justice Department treats all cases fairly and condemned attacks on the institution.

In summary, the Justice Department’s investigation into Hunter Biden is nearing its conclusion with a plea deal, but congressional Republicans continue to accuse the Biden family of corruption. The latest allegations from IRS whistleblowers and other claims made by Republicans are being contested, and the ongoing nature of the investigation adds complexity to lawmakers’ efforts to uncover more details. The Justice Department emphasizes its commitment to equal treatment under the law and rejects allegations of bias.
