Multiple Teens Shot in Disturbing Incident Following Conclusion of Milwaukee Juneteenth Celebration
A shooting incident occurred on Monday afternoon shortly after the conclusion of Milwaukee’s Juneteenth celebration, leaving at least six teenagers injured, according to officials from the police and fire departments.
The incident took place around 4:20 p.m. near the Greater Philadelphia Church of God in Christ, as reported by witnesses and a bystander’s Facebook Live video capturing the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman confirmed that among the victims was a 17-year-old who may have been involved as a gunman and is now under custody. Authorities are still searching for other suspects who remain unidentified.
The victims, consisting of four girls and two boys, were between the ages of 14 and 19.
Chief Norman suggested that the shooting might have originated from a fight among several girls and young women, but the exact cause of the dispute is yet unknown.
While the injuries sustained by the victims varied, Chief Norman stated that they did not appear to be life-threatening. He expressed his concern and questioned the community’s response to the violence, saying, “Milwaukee, what’s happening to our children?” during a press conference.
He further emphasized the need for parents, guardians, and elders to take action in preventing such acts of violence, urging for the removal of handguns and destructive weapons from the hands of young individuals.
“This is a recurring narrative, and it’s becoming increasingly tiresome. Really tiresome,” Norman lamented. The incident adds to a weekend marked by numerous shootings across the United States.
Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson emphasized the safety and growth of Monday’s Juneteenth observance, condemning the subsequent violence as “completely unacceptable.”
He acknowledged the power of the event in bringing the community together and fostering a sense of unity, while expressing disappointment in the contrast created by the violent incident.
A witness named T. Jenkins recounted that a fight between two women had preceded the shooting. According to Jenkins, a young man pulled out a gun, causing panic and chaos among the crowd. He added that he provided aid to a young woman who had suffered a neck wound, applying pressure to stop the bleeding and maintaining a calm environment.
A Facebook Live video captured moments after the shooting depicted paramedics treating at least two wounded individuals on the pavement. The person filming the video mentioned that a teenage girl or young woman had been shot in the neck. They comforted a distraught friend who sought to reach her mother.
Despite the festival’s official conclusion, a large number of people were still present in the vicinity, with hundreds walking along the street. The Juneteenth celebration had attracted thousands of attendees throughout the day, featuring food vendors, community organizations offering resources, and various entertainment activities.
Keith Caldwell, a vendor, described the chaotic scene, recounting the commotion, gunshots, and people screaming. Reflecting on the incident’s security, Caldwell emphasized the pressing need for gun control to address the currently uncontrollable situation.
