On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump directed criticism towards Kayleigh McEnany, his former White House press secretary and a longstanding ally. This criticism arose subsequent to McEnany’s appearance on Fox News, during which she asserted that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Trump’s primary opponent, was gaining ground in the Iowa primary polls. Trump took to his Truth Social platform to address McEnany, referring to her as “Kayleigh ‘Milktoast’ McEnany,” accusing her of providing incorrect poll numbers on Fox News. He insisted that he held a 34-point lead over DeSantis, not 25, highlighting a potential misspelling of the word “milquetoast,” which implies timidity or weakness.

Trump’s social media post also implied that McEnany might be purposefully disseminating what he believes to be inaccurate information. He dismissed her by stating, “RINOS & Globalists can have her,” employing the acronym for “Republicans in name only.”

The specific poll to which both McEnany and Trump referred remains uncertain. Earlier that evening, McEnany appeared on the Fox News show “Jesse Watters Primetime,” discussing DeSantis’ polling numbers in Iowa, which is set to host the initial round of the GOP presidential primaries. According to the former White House press secretary, “If you look at the polling now, it was Trump [with a] 34 [point lead] in Iowa, it’s now Trump 25.” McEnany acknowledged that DeSantis’ team could view this as a positive, claiming they had “closed the gap by 9 points” since the Florida governor announced his candidacy. She added, “Still, Trump’s hugely ahead, but they say they’re closing the gap. That’s their argument.”

An Emerson College poll conducted between May 19 and 22 reported that Trump holds a 42-point lead over DeSantis in Iowa. It is worth noting that DeSantis officially declared his candidacy on May 24. While McEnany has long been an outspoken supporter of Trump, this is not the first time she has made remarks that may not sit well with her former boss. Following the Republicans’ underwhelming performance in the 2022 midterms, McEnany was among the first to urge Trump to postpone the announcement of his 2024 run.
