Recent shootings across the United States have been met by a flurry of finger-pointing and debate over who is to blame and what can be done to prevent future tragedies.

On Sunday’s “State of the Union” program, Democratic Michigan Rep. Hillary Scholten asked, “What have Republicans done about it?” Former chief of staff for then-Vice President Mike Pence, Marc Short, quickly pushed back against the accusation.

“Come on, stop it,” Short interjected.

CNN anchor Jake Tapper followed up by noting that although House Republicans have proposed a debt ceiling plan, their specifics about funding cuts have yet to be made public.

The White House, however, claims the bill includes slashes in funding to the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) and the Bureau of Prisons, which could lead to federal agents being laid off.

In response to the White House’s claims, Short pointed out that “the vast majority of inner cities are Democrat-controlled, as you know.”

Karen Finney, a CNN political commentator, argued that crime rates in red states are higher than those in blue states. Studies, however, show that blue cities tend to have the highest amount of crime in comparison to red cities.

The heated exchange between Short and Scholten highlights the ongoing debate between Republicans and Democrats over how to address shootings in the United States.

It’s clear that both sides are entrenched in their own positions, but neither can deny the facts: that shootings are a major issue in this country and something needs to be done.

Republicans believe that more law enforcement on the streets and increased funding for the police is an effective way to address the problem. Unfortunately, many of the cities with the highest crime rates are run by Democrats, and these same Democrats are the ones calling for defunding law enforcement.

It’s an interesting dichotomy, and one that can’t be ignored. Republicans have proposed solutions to the problem, yet Democrats continue to point the finger at them and claim they are not doing enough.

The bottom line is that we need to find a way to work together to address this issue. We can’t afford to keep playing the blame game and pointing fingers at each other. We need to put our differences aside and come up with a solution that works for everyone.

It’s time for Republicans and Democrats to come together and find a solution that will help keep our communities safe. We must take action now, before another tragedy occurs.
