Joe Biden’s latest attempt to solidify backing from Black voters by speaking on the 58th anniversary of “Bloody Sunday” has raised questions about his true involvement in the civil rights movement. During his speech in Selma, Alabama, Biden remarked that he was a student in the North during the civil rights movement. But there is no historical evidence that supports this claim.
This isn’t the first time Biden has made questionable claims about his involvement in the civil rights movement. In 1983, Biden claimed he participated in sit-in protests to desegregate public spaces. However, a former student later contradicted this claim, saying that Biden and other white students were “oblivious” to the situation.
In 1987, Biden admitted that he was “not an activist” during the 1960s, despite believing in the civil rights movement’s principles. Last January, he implied that he was arrested for being a civil rights activist, though he didn’t provide any details to back up this claim.
It appears that Biden is trying to pander to the African-American community and take credit for actions he never actually participated in. This is a cynical political move and it undermines the struggle of those who actually did fight for civil rights in the 1960s.
Biden’s comments about his involvement in the civil rights movement are not only misleading, but also insulting to those who actually were part of the movement. It’s important to recognize the true heroes of the civil rights movement and not just those who are merely claiming to be without proof.
This sort of dishonesty and pandering should not be tolerated in our political discourse. Biden should be held accountable for his false claims and should not be allowed to take credit for something he was not a part of but alas, this is the world we live in.
So it’s up to us to spread the truth and bring awareness to these lies.
It’s time to recognize the real heroes of the civil rights movement and to call out those who are taking advantage of it for political gain.
