On Wednesday night, Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel both kicked off their respective shows by welcoming Black History Month while also lamenting the alleged attacks on the subject of black history— Two very different things.

Liberals seem to always confuse Critical Race Theory with American black history.

Colbert started by calling out Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, saying “It is the first day of Black History Month. Happy Black History Month, everybody. Or as Ron DeSantis calls it, ‘month.’”

Colbert then went on to mock the corporate promotions of Black History Month, before returning to Republicans, saying “Of course, this year feels differently because in the last year at least 18 states have enacted legislation to limit the teaching of divisive concepts or Critical Race Theory.”

He later wrapped up his thoughts on the matter by expressing his worry for teachers, saying “And as black history month arrives, teachers’ fears are mounting and that’s not right, okay teachers already have enough fears, mainly running into students at the grocery store and having to explain that they don’t live at the school.”

Meanwhile, over at Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the eponymous host also took aim at Republicans, “Thank you for joining us on the first day of February. It’s February, it is black history month, President Biden made an official proclamation declaring it Black History Month. Republicans in the House of Representatives countered by declaring it March.”

It’s clear that the media, especially those in the comedy genre, are taking the side of those who believe that Critical Race Theory should be taught in the classroom. But what is Critical Race Theory and why are Republicans so opposed to it?

Critical Race Theory is a framework used to interpret and analyze society and culture through the lens of race and racism. It is a theory that is rooted in the idea that racism is inherent in all aspects of society, including legal structures and institutions. It also suggests that racism is institutionalized and that its effects are felt in many aspects of life, not just in the ways that we think of as traditional racism.

This theory is controversial because it implies that racism is systemic and that it is not just a result of individual prejudice. It also suggests that racism is ingrained in our society and that it is perpetuated by the structures and institutions that promote it.

Watch

The Republican party has expressed its opposition to Critical Race Theory because they argue that it is divisive and radical. They fear that by teaching this theory in schools, it will lead to a situation where students are encouraged to view themselves and others in terms of race and racism. They also argue that this theory can lead to a situation where students are encouraged to view their peers and teachers in terms of race, leading to division and hostility.

Which we’ve already seen is a very real concern.

Whether or not you agree with the Republican party’s stance on Critical Race Theory, It’s also important to recognize that the media is full of bias and clearly campaigning for Democrats at this point.
