While the drama cooks up as lawmakers fight it out over who will be the next Speaker of The House, I wanted to take a moment and recognize a rand and historical moment. Chip Roy broke through the hard line of nasty slurs and murmuring name-calling from the left to address history in the making.

Roy’s comments on the House floor Wednesday honoring both Representative-elect Byron Donalds, R-Fla., and Representative-elect Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., marked a rare moment of bipartisanship in an otherwise fraught congressional vote for speaker of the House.

In his speech, Roy praised Donalds’ character and background as a single mother’s son who found God at 21 and has since devoted himself to fighting for his family and his country. At the same time, he acknowledged that Donalds’ nomination marks a historic moment: for the first time ever, two Black Americans are up for Speaker of the House.

Roy also expressed his belief that race should not be a consideration when making nominations—but rather it should be based on “the content of people’s character.” He argues that Donalds will bring much-needed change to Congress by better-reflecting voters outside Washington DC—a theme echoed by many conservative politicians today.

“We do not seek to judge people by the color of their skin, but rather the content of their character,” Roy said. “Byron Donalds is a good man — raised by a single mom, moved past diversity, became a Christian man at the age of 21, and has devoted his life to advancing the cause for his family and this country. And he has done it admirably.”

“But there’s an important reason for nominating Byron, and that is this country needs a change,” he said. “This country needs leadership that does not reflect this city, this town, that is badly broken.”

The question is: what does this moment mean? In a political atmosphere where partisanship often takes precedence over progress, can moments like these open up new paths towards bipartisan cooperation? Or are they merely fleeting moments of goodwill that do little to bridge divides?

Regardless of one’s political leanings, there is no denying that Chip Roy’s comments did something remarkable: they offered recognition to both sides in an environment where such gestures are few and far between. While it remains to be seen whether or not meaningful dialogue will emerge from this moment in history, it certainly serves as an example of civility in politics—something we need more than ever today.

For starters, there is evidence that when lawmakers show respect across party lines it can lead to more successful collaboration down the line.

A study done by Stanford University found that when members of Congress signaled their willingness to compromise on certain issues before negotiations began (by reaching out across party lines), those talks were more likely to result in successful outcomes than if no such efforts had been made prior. This suggests that moments like Roy’s could serve as positive indicators for future dialogue between Republicans and Democrats alike—which could have far-reaching implications for our government’s ability to pass legislation going forward.
