With just days until Election Day, Republican lawmakers are calling out the Pentagon over reports of inadequate voting resources for active-duty military service members. GOP Representatives Brian Mast (R-Fla.), Bill Huizenga (R-Mich.), and Mike Waltz (R-Fla.) sent a letter to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, expressing “grave concern” over what they see as the Defense Department’s failure to ensure our nation’s service members have the resources and guidance they need to vote.
According to these lawmakers, active-duty personnel have reported empty stockpiles of write-in absentee ballots at military bases and inadequate information on how to vote when stationed away from home. With voting being a fundamental right, especially for those defending our freedom, Republicans are demanding immediate action to remedy these issues.
GOP Calls Out Pentagon for Failing to Support Military Voters
In their letter to Secretary Austin, the lawmakers emphasize that service members have raised serious concerns about “inadequate education” at the administrative level regarding the registration and voting process, as well as guidance on requesting absentee ballots. Some service members have reportedly been told that requested ballots were simply unavailable, as stockpiles at some bases have not been replenished.

“Our nation’s elite warriors deserve every opportunity to cast their ballot for the next commander-in-chief,” Rep. Mast, a veteran who lost both legs while serving in Afghanistan, told Fox News Digital. “This is absolutely unacceptable, especially when the administration claims to care about democracy and the right to vote.” Mast pointed out that, while the Biden administration has poured resources into blocking state-level election integrity measures, they appear to have failed to plan for our military’s access to voting resources.
The Need for Immediate Action to Protect Military Voting Rights
The lawmakers’ letter requests urgent clarification on what training and guidance are provided to Voting Assistance Officers (VAOs) and whether military personnel are supplied with enough federal write-in absentee ballots if their state-issued ballots don’t arrive in time. They are also asking if troops have been given adequate access to sample ballots, enabling them to make informed voting choices even if their ballots are delayed.
Rep. Mike Waltz, who served 27 years in the Army and National Guard, underscored the importance of ensuring that every deployed soldier has the tools needed to cast their vote, saying, “We need assurances that these service members, who put their lives on the line for our country, have the information and tools they need to cast their ballot.”
Rep. Huizenga echoed the sentiment, calling the situation “completely unacceptable” and highlighting it as yet another example of the Biden administration failing to support military members in critical ways.
The Pentagon Responds – But Is It Enough?
A Defense Department official responded to Fox News Digital, noting that supplies of voting materials at military installations are determined by “local need and demand” and directing service members to visit FVAP.gov for printable copies of the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot. They also highlighted that the Federal Voting Assistance Program has trained over 3,000 VAOs this election cycle to assist military voters.
While the Pentagon insists that installation commanders ensure voting assistance is part of administrative processes, from in-processing to deployment checklists, many remain unconvinced this is sufficient. Voting procedures for military personnel fall under the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act, which mandates that service members are notified of upcoming elections and receive expedited ballot mailing. However, recent complaints suggest that these standards are not being adequately met.
The Stakes Are Higher Than Ever for Military Voters
This election cycle is crucial, especially for those in uniform who rely on their commander-in-chief’s leadership in life-or-death situations. With complaints piling up and Election Day nearing, Republican lawmakers are committed to ensuring that service members can exercise their fundamental right to vote, no matter where they are stationed. As Rep. Mast said, “Our elite warriors deserve every opportunity to make their voices heard, especially in choosing the leader who will make the tough decisions impacting their lives and futures.”
For Republicans, ensuring that every American’s vote counts is paramount—and the men and women serving our country should be no exception. As the countdown to Election Day ticks down, lawmakers are doubling down on their demands that the Pentagon mobilize all resources to secure the vote for our troops.
