The 2018 poisoning of British woman Dawn Sturgess has once again sparked outrage and calls for accountability, as new details emerge during a public inquiry into her tragic death. This inquiry, revealing that the amount of poison found in the discarded perfume bottle she unwittingly opened could have killed thousands of people, paints a stark picture of both the threat posed by Russian intelligence operations and the failures of the UK government to protect its citizens from such a deadly attack.

From a conservative Republican viewpoint, this case isn’t just about the tragic loss of an innocent life—it’s a chilling reminder of the dangers posed by hostile foreign powers like Russia and the gross incompetence of authorities who failed to anticipate or prevent such an atrocity on British soil. Dawn Sturgess’ death, which occurred in Amesbury, England, after she sprayed the contents of the perfume bottle on her wrist, should have been an avoidable tragedy. Her partner survived, but the inquiry has revealed the sheer magnitude of the risk the public faced from this Soviet-developed nerve agent, Novichok.

Lead counsel Andrew O’Connor stated during the inquiry that the bottle contained enough poison to kill thousands. Let that sink in: thousands of people could have died simply because this deadly weapon was carelessly discarded in a public space. This was not some small, isolated incident. The implications of such a chemical weapon left in the open are staggering.

The inquiry points out that their exposure to Novichok occurred four months after former Russian intelligence officer Sergei Skripal and his daughter were attacked with the same nerve agent in Salisbury, a nearby city. It’s clear that these were not isolated incidents, but part of a broader strategy by the Russian government, allegedly orchestrated by none other than Vladimir Putin himself. Britain, of course, has blamed Russian intelligence for the attack, but Moscow has consistently denied any involvement, despite President Putin’s own damning words. Putin referred to Skripal, a former double agent for the UK, as a “scumbag” of no interest to the Kremlin. Yet, here we are, with Skripal and his daughter having narrowly escaped death, and a British woman, who had nothing to do with espionage, having lost her life.

Skripal’s statement during the inquiry only adds to the gravity of the situation. He expressed shock that the Russian regime would go to such lengths to try to murder him in Britain. Skripal was no longer a spy—he had been exchanged in a 2010 spy swap and was living a free life in the UK. He received a presidential pardon from Russia, and believed that his life was no longer under threat. But the fact that this attack happened demonstrates one key reality: when it comes to regimes like Putin’s, no one is ever truly safe. As Skripal himself said, Putin must have at least given permission for the attack. This points to the deep, authoritarian control Putin exercises, making every major decision himself.

Now, the real question facing the UK government is whether this attack could have been prevented. Attorney Michael Mansfield, representing the Sturgess family, raised crucial questions about the foreseeability of such a risk. Was it really unforeseeable that Russian operatives would pose a continued threat to the British public, even after the Skripal attack? Or were the UK authorities simply asleep at the wheel, allowing an innocent woman to pay the ultimate price for their lack of preparedness?

Mansfield rightfully asked whether Dawn Sturgess’ death—and the potential deaths of thousands more—could have been prevented. Was the public adequately protected from such a threat? These are questions that any responsible government must answer. And as the inquiry unfolds, it’s becoming increasingly clear that the UK government has a lot to answer for. The protection of its citizens from foreign threats should be one of its top priorities, and yet, here we are, mourning the loss of a mother, a partner, and an innocent civilian who had nothing to do with Russian espionage.

From a conservative perspective, this incident is a glaring example of the failure of liberal governments to take a hard stance against foreign adversaries. It shows the consequences of underestimating the threats posed by regimes like Putin’s Russia. And it raises the question of whether the UK’s leadership, in its complacency, allowed its people to be put at risk.

The inquiry is also a reminder of the importance of strong, decisive leadership in the face of foreign threats. Had the UK government acted more swiftly and decisively after the Skripal poisoning, perhaps Dawn Sturgess would still be alive today. Conservative principles demand accountability from the government, particularly when it comes to the protection of national security. The fact that a weapon of mass destruction—because that’s what Novichok is—was left in a public place, accessible to any passerby, is nothing short of a scandal.

As Heather Hallett, the coroner who conducted the 2018 inquest into Sturgess’ death, pointed out, a public inquiry was necessary to fully explore how she died. But this inquiry must also serve as a wake-up call to all Western nations. The threat from Russia is real, and it’s not going away. We must demand stronger national security measures, more accountability, and a government that is willing to confront these threats head-on, rather than turning a blind eye.

In conclusion, Dawn Sturgess’ death was a preventable tragedy that could have claimed thousands more lives. It was the result of both the malevolence of a hostile foreign power and the negligence of a government that failed to protect its citizens. This inquiry must lead to real accountability and action, so that no more innocent lives are lost to the careless actions of foreign operatives on Western soil.
