In what can only be described as a blatant abuse of power, the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) recently suspended their strike, leaving Americans everywhere questioning the timing and motives behind their decision. While dockworkers briefly paused their operations, threatening the U.S. supply chain and millions of jobs, it’s becoming increasingly clear that this so-called “strike” was nothing more than a cynical ploy designed to exploit the upcoming 2024 Presidential Election. As usual, the union leadership has prioritized its political leverage and self-interest over the well-being of American workers and businesses.

For conservatives and supporters of economic freedom, this strike and its suspension are enraging for one reason: unions, once established to protect workers’ rights, are now wielding their power to push a political agenda at the expense of everyday Americans. Even more infuriating is that the man leading this charge, ILA President Harold Daggett, has become a symbol of the hypocrisy that pervades modern union leadership.

Harold Daggett: A Union Boss Profiting from Worker Suffering

Let’s take a moment to examine the man behind the strike: Harold Daggett. As President of the ILA, Daggett has a history of opposing automation and pushing for increased wages and benefits for dockworkers, often at the cost of economic stability. But as workers struggle to make ends meet, Daggett himself enjoys an estimated net worth of millions. How can someone who claims to represent the interests of working-class Americans live such a life of luxury while pushing strikes that harm the very people he is supposed to protect?

This monetary hypocrisy should make every American—especially hard-working, tax-paying conservatives—furious. The ILA claims to fight for fair wages and job security, but the reality is that people like Daggett are more concerned with maintaining their power and padding their pockets than with helping the rank-and-file dockworkers. Daggett, with his wealth and privilege, is not feeling the effects of this strike—nor will he feel the consequences if the supply chain collapses, leaving average Americans struggling to buy basic goods.

The Real Victims: The American People

While Daggett and his cronies in the union leadership play political games, it is everyday Americans who bear the brunt of the consequences. A strike by 45,000 dockworkers would cause untold damage to the U.S. economy, disrupting the flow of goods at 36 ports along the East and Gulf Coasts. As a result, businesses could lose billions, shelves could go empty, and inflation could skyrocket even further—all at a time when the American people are already suffering under Biden’s weak economic policies.

For small business owners who rely on a steady stream of imports to keep their operations running, this strike could be a death sentence. Families already stretched thin by rising inflation and stagnant wages would see higher prices on everyday goods like groceries, clothes, and household products. And let’s not forget about America’s farmers, who depend on these ports to export their goods to international markets. A strike of this magnitude would put the livelihoods of millions of Americans at risk.

The fact that the ILA decided to suspend the strike—rather than call it off entirely—only adds insult to injury. It’s clear that they are holding the American economy hostage, waiting for the most opportune moment to strike again, potentially using the 2024 election as leverage to force politicians into caving to their demands.

Election Year Extortion

The timing of this strike suspension is not coincidental. With the 2024 Presidential Election just around the corner, it’s obvious that the ILA is positioning itself to extract concessions from whichever political party is willing to bow to their demands. This is the exact kind of political extortion that unions have become notorious for, and it’s a tactic that should alarm every conservative who values free enterprise and economic stability.

Let’s not forget how the Biden administration has repeatedly shown its willingness to bend the knee to unions, offering them special protections and privileges at the expense of the American taxpayer. Biden’s administration has given unions like the ILA an outsized influence over national policy, and now they’re using that power to manipulate the political landscape in their favor. The suspension of this strike is nothing more than a calculated move to give the union time to see which candidate will offer them the most during an election season where both parties are vying for labor support.

This is exactly why conservatives have long opposed the growing power of unions. These organizations, which once had a noble purpose in protecting workers, have morphed into powerful political machines that prioritize their leadership’s wealth and influence over the needs of actual workers. Instead of focusing on job security and fair treatment, unions now use their members as pawns in their political chess game—leveraging national elections to get what they want.

The Future of American Industry

What happens next could determine the future of American industry. If unions like the ILA are allowed to dictate terms through extortion and political gamesmanship, it will set a dangerous precedent for future labor disputes. More strikes could follow, crippling industries, driving inflation even higher, and forcing businesses to close their doors.

The American people deserve better than this. They deserve a government that supports job creation, economic growth, and innovation—not one that bows to union demands at the expense of the nation’s prosperity. It’s time for politicians to stand up to union leaders like Harold Daggett and stop allowing them to exploit the political process for their own gain.

In the end, the ILA’s strike is a clear reminder that unions have become part of the problem, not the solution. It’s time for conservatives to push back against this growing union power and demand reforms that put American workers and businesses first. If we don’t act now, we may find ourselves at the mercy of union leaders whose only goal is to enrich themselves and increase their political influence—no matter the cost to America.
