In a tragic and highly publicized case, Carly Gregg, a 15-year-old from Mississippi, was found guilty of murdering her mother, Ashley Smylie, and attempting to murder her stepfather, Heath Smylie, in their Brandon home on March 19, 2024. The Rankin County jury convicted her on all charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, and tampering with evidence.
According to court records, Gregg shot her mother twice in the face using a .357 Magnum pistol. Following the murder, Gregg texted her stepfather from her mother’s phone, attempting to lure him back to the home, where she then shot and wounded him during a struggle. Gregg was arrested after fleeing the scene and was found later by authorities. Dramatic bodycam footage shown in court captured the chaotic aftermath.
During the trial, the defense argued that Gregg was experiencing severe mental health issues, including psychosis and acute stress, at the time of the incident. They claimed that her actions were a result of an undiagnosed mental condition, exacerbated by medication. The defense pursued an insanity plea, but the prosecution countered that Gregg was fully aware of her actions, pointing to video evidence showing her calmly handling her mother’s phone after the murder.
Prosecutors emphasized that Gregg’s actions were premeditated, and the jury ultimately agreed, rejecting the insanity defense. Surveillance footage and testimony from friends also indicated that Gregg had planned the attack, telling a friend that she had “three more waiting” for her stepfather when he returned home.
